Where to stay in Crete: choose a base that fits your trip

Start with Chania for harbour evenings and western beaches, Rethymno for old town plus town beach, or Elounda for a resort-led stay. Match CHQ to the west and HER to central or eastern plans; a second base helps when both ends matter.

Choose your airport and base together

Compare CHQ for Chania and the far west; HER for Heraklion, Hersonissos–Malia and Mirabello Bay. For Rethymno, compare both airports against your arrival time and onward connection.

The south needs a more precise choice. Matala usually pairs with HER; Plakias is approached through the Rethymno side of the island; Agia Galini deserves an address-specific comparison. Paleochora is on the southwest coast, reached from the Chania side. These are separate destinations, not interchangeable points along a coastal highway.

The one-base or two-base suggestions put these choices into an itinerary; the transport notes cover arrivals without a car.

Find your part of Crete

Use the map to compare airports, towns and beaches. The seven numbers identify broad groups of bases, not seven individual resorts. The west, centre and south, and east views make the smaller places easier to distinguish.

Chania (CHQ) serves the west; Heraklion (HER) the centre and east. Matala is one southern option. Move the map with two fingers.

Ports, beaches, towns & hotels

1. Chania and the western beach strip

Choose Chania for harbour evenings, old-town lanes and a first taste of western Crete. Stay in the old town if you want to step out for dinner; choose Agia Marina or Platanias if a beach-and-pool routine matters more than being beside the Venetian harbour.

In the harbour quarter and lanes of Splantzia, plan a pedestrian arrival. Casa Leone’s final approach is on foot. If you have a car, arrange parking and luggage drop-off before arrival. Its named Casa Leone Suite accommodates up to four using a double bed and a pull-out couch; that is not the layout of every room.

At Porto Platanias Beach Resort & Spa, confirm the room-to-beach route if steps or road crossings matter. It is a different property from the nearby Porto Platanias Beach Luxury Selection. A Platanias address does not put you within an old-town evening stroll of Chania.

For a smaller family beach-village stay, also compare Kalyves and Almyrida on Souda Bay in Apokoronas, with beaches and village restaurants. Allow a separate journey for Chania’s old-town evenings, and check the exact hotel’s beach approach and transport for your dates.

Chania works without a car for a town-focused stay; plan Balos and Elafonisi as separate excursions using the transport notes.

For a beach-and-town compromise, compare Nea Chora, west of the old harbour. Its sandy town beach and fish taverns let you fit swimming and a seafront meal around time in Chania, with the old town reachable on foot. That is a different choice from a large resort farther along the western beach strip.

2. Kissamos, Falassarna and Paleochora

Choose the far west when its beaches are the point of the holiday. Kissamos suits the northwestern coast and the departure port for Balos cruises. Falassarna puts the beach at the centre of the day. Paleochora is a southwest town with its own beaches and evenings.

Galini Beach sits on the Kissamos waterfront, where the shore mixes sand and pebbles. The Kavonisi cruise port is a separate journey from the hotel: allow for getting there and checking in for your boat. Kissamos is a useful base for exploring, rather than a substitute for Chania’s old town.

Across the mountains, Libyan Princess is not beachfront. The hotel places the bus station about 50 metres away, useful when you want to arrive by bus and spend several days locally. A south-coast address does not provide a quick coastal drive to Matala or Plakias.

For Balos, choose the access method before hiring a car. The road approach includes an unmade section and a walk down to the lagoon. Check your own rental agreement before using it.

One rental agreement’s Balos exclusion

AutoTrip’s rental terms, for example, exclude coverage for unauthorised or unpaved-road use and name Balos. These are that operator’s conditions, so check the agreement for the car you hire.

The boat option leaves from Kissamos/Kavonisi; a combined Gramvousa–Balos cruise takes much of the day. Prices and age bands are in the cost notes.

3. Rethymno

Choose Rethymno for an old town and a long town beach in the same stay. It suits days on foot, dinner in the lanes and selected bus trips. Its position between Chania and Heraklion is useful, but it does not turn the whole island into an easy day trip.

The old town’s lanes, minarets and Fortezza give Rethymno a character of its own; the sandy beach stretches east from town. Rimondi occupies two nearby historic buildings. Xanthoudidou Street is pedestrian-only. The hotel can arrange luggage transfer on request, so check the meeting point if you arrive with a car or heavy bags.

For a car-free week, choose an address that makes both the beach and your departure bus stop comfortable walks. Some resorts sold under “Rethymno” are well outside the old town. That can be exactly right for a beach holiday, provided you plan transport for evenings in the centre.

4. Heraklion, Ammoudara and Agia Pelagia

Choose Heraklion for the archaeological museum, Knossos, the port and a practical city stay around HER. Ammoudara is the beach-resort alternative west of the city. Farther along the coast, Agia Pelagia and its Mononaftis Bay offer a different setting, where the exact hotel’s slope and beach access matter.

For a ferry stay at GDM Megaron, check the sailing’s actual departure gate; the passenger port is larger than a map pin suggests.

For an Agapi Beach arrival, check the stop and fare zone: the airport–Ammoudara urban route crosses a zone boundary beyond Candia Maris.

Agia Pelagia’s bays offer a different holiday from central Heraklion. A hotel with a sea view can sit high above the water, so distinguish a pool terrace from a walk-out beach when comparing rooms.

5. Hersonissos, Stalis and Malia

Choose this coast east of HER for a resort-led holiday, especially when pools, children’s facilities and meals on site simplify the day. The exact address matters: Hersonissos’s nightlife streets, the Stalis beach strip and Malia’s resorts do not all offer the same evening atmosphere.

Phāea Cretan Malia welcomes families as well as couples, east of the resort centre and outside Malia’s main nightlife strip.

Stalis is worth considering if you want beach restaurants and shops around you without spending most of the holiday inside one large resort. For evenings out, compare the town centre; for a stay focused on the hotel, compare its grounds and meal plan. Check the street and room orientation relative to late bars if quiet nights matter.

6. Elounda and Agios Nikolaos

Choose Mirabello Bay for time at a good resort, sea views and trips around Spinalonga. Choose central Agios Nikolaos when restaurants, the lake and town life on foot matter more. A hotel marketed with either town’s name may sit well away from its centre.

Ask about the exact room-to-beach route if mobility or a buggy is central to the booking. Do not confuse it with the separate adults-only Domes Aulūs Elounda.

For Minos Palace’s adults-only stay, confirm the minimum guest age if travelling with older teenagers and plan the connection into Agios Nikolaos for dinner.

7. Matala, Agia Galini and Plakias

Choose the south for a stay centred on one coastal town and its nearby beaches. Matala brings caves and sunsets; Agia Galini has a compact harbour setting; Plakias suits beach days and excursions towards Preveli. Choose the town first, then search for accommodation there.

At Cyano, choose the kitchen-equipped category for an independent stay. For a party of five, obtain written confirmation of the named category’s capacity before booking: the published capacity descriptions differ.2

Minos Boutique is an adults-only hotel in Agia Galini. A sea-view room gives you the harbour outlook; ground-floor street-view rooms are different. Ask about floor and access if stairs matter. For a winter stay, pair the hotel’s year-round opening with the local restaurant and beach-service options operating on your dates.

The south can work without a car when you stay in one town and use a dated bus connection to get there. It becomes less convenient when the plan involves a new cove every morning. Plakias, Agia Galini and Matala are not stops on one frequent coastal bus route.

Use the local forecast and beach conditions for the south coast. Preveli needs a separate access plan: the beach lies below the parking area, with a downhill walk and the climb back afterwards.

One base or two?

For seven nights with town, beach and a few outings, one base is usually enough. A Chania stay with western excursions, or Rethymno with beach days and one town visit, leaves time for evenings without repacking. A week split between two bases can still make sense if the second place is the main reason for travelling.

For ten nights with both western beaches and eastern sights, a five-and-five split is a useful starting point. Chania or Kissamos plus Agios Nikolaos or Elounda lets each part of the island have its own days. A flight into CHQ and out of HER can reduce backtracking; compare any one-way car-hire charge before choosing it.

For a slower contrast, combine Chania with Paleochora, or Rethymno with Plakias. Neither requires adding the far east. With two weeks, a third base is an option if it earns its place in the itinerary; it is not an obligation to cover the whole island. Leave the hotel-change day lightly scheduled.

Getting around without overplanning

A car-free trip works best when the address and the planned journeys fit together. An old-town hotel with restaurants nearby is a different proposition from a hillside resort or an isolated beach apartment. Check both the outward journey and the last return, including the day of the week. Add airport transfers and planned outings when comparing a town hotel with a self-catering beach stay.3

Airport links, bus corridors and useful fare checks
JourneyWhat to plan around
CHQ → Chania or RethymnoKTEL Chania–Rethymno publishes dated airport schedules. Check the timetable covering your arrival, especially for the direct Rethymno service and late flights.
HER → central HeraklionUse the urban airport bus. The regular Zone A fare is €1.30 per single journey when bought before boarding, or €2.30 onboard, under the tariff effective 23 March 2026. These are ordinary single fares.
Chania ↔ Rethymno ↔ HeraklionIntercity buses support selected town trips. Check the relevant operator’s dated departure and return; do not infer beach access from an intercity connection.
HER/Heraklion → Hersonissos, Malia or Agios NikolaosCheck KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi for the precise route, stop and onward walk to your hotel. Elounda or a resort outside town may require another leg.
Rethymno → Plakias or Agia GaliniServices exist, with day-of-week limits and revisions. Check current notices as well as the timetable; the Plakias corridor has had temporary roadworks changes.
Heraklion ↔ MatalaCheck the eastern operator’s timetable for your travel date, especially the last return from Matala; it limits a car-free day trip.
Chania → Paleochora or western beachesCheck the specific seasonal route. Confirm the Falassarna route and return separately for your dates.

The western operator is KTEL Chania–Rethymno; the eastern operator is KTEL Heraklion–Lasithi. HER’s city buses have their own fares and zone boundaries. For airport–Ammoudara trips beyond Candia Maris, check the Zone B fare instead of assuming the city rate.

For a taxi or private transfer, request a quote for the exact hotel, flight time, passenger count and luggage. Airport-to-town estimates are not quotes for remote resorts. If driving, allow for the actual mountain route and current notices; north-coast distances do not predict a south-coast journey.

Two costs to check before booking

Allow for Greece’s climate resilience fee in addition to the room quote, and price the specific Balos excursion if it is a reason for choosing the west. Both have conditions that matter more than a single headline amount.

Climate fee by legal category, plus Balos boat prices

Climate resilience fee

The fee is charged per room or apartment, per daily use, rather than per guest. The amount depends on the property’s legal accommodation category, not its Booking star display. Ask the property to confirm the charge and how it appears in your quote; it is collected with a separate receipt.

Legal accommodation category1 April–31 October1 November–31 March
Registered 1–2-star hotel€2€0.50
Registered 3-star hotel€5€1.50

Licensed furnished tourist villa€15€4
Licensed furnished tourist residence under 80 m²€8€2
Licensed furnished tourist residence 80 m² or more€15€4

All amounts are euros per unit per daily use. The two 80 m² thresholds differ by legal category.4 Free-of-charge stays are exempt under AADE’s guidance; the fee is not multiplied by the number or ages of occupants. Use the property’s registered accommodation category when checking the fee.

Balos and Gramvousa by boat

Cretan Daily Cruises’ 2026 combined Gramvousa–Balos fare is €40 for ages 13+ and €24 for ages 3–12 from April to 14 July and from 16 September to 31 October. From 15 July to 15 September, it is €45 / €27 respectively. Children aged two and under travel free. These are per-person cruise tickets; meals are extra.

The operator separately lists a €1 municipal levy for passengers over 13; confirm its treatment of a 13-year-old when booking, since that wording differs from the cruise’s adult fare band. Check the seasonal sailing dates and boarding instructions. A port transfer may add to the cost.

Choosing a base outside the main beach season

For a spring or late-autumn trip, a town base makes it easier to build the day around museums, meals and walks when beach weather disappoints. Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion offer different versions of that trip; decide which sights you want rather than choosing a resort solely for its pool photograph.

If swimming or a children’s club is essential, confirm the hotel’s opening dates and the operating period of that particular facility. A property being open does not establish that every pool is heated or every restaurant runs. For October travel, check both the accommodation and the reduced transport or boat timetable before booking.

Beach conditions

Choose your beach for the conditions that day. A shallow lagoon is not a guarantee of safe water, and a sheltered-looking bay can still be windy. The Region of Crete’s Balos page lists neither a lifeguard nor natural shade there; plan accordingly and follow local access instructions. For the south, use a local beach forecast such as Plakias on meteo.gr, rather than assuming the mountains remove the wind.

Questions that settle the choice

Is Chania or Heraklion better for a first visit?

Chania fits a harbour-and-western-beaches itinerary. Heraklion fits archaeology, the port and excursions in central or eastern Crete. Choose the city that reduces travel to the things you actually want to do.

Which area works best for a family?

Start with the daily routine. Ammoudara, the western beach strip and the Hersonissos–Malia resorts suit families who want sand, pools and meals close together. An old-town stay suits more time out exploring. Enter every child’s age when checking the room, and confirm whether the extra sleeping places are full beds, sofas or truckles.

Can we stay in the south without driving?

Yes, if a dated connection gets you to the town and you are happy to stay locally. Check the arrival, departure and last return before booking. Moving between several southern bases or remote beaches is a different transport problem from spending a week in Plakias or Paleochora.

Is Rethymno the best single base for the whole island?

It is a good compromise for town life, its beach and selected north-coast trips. It does not make both Balos and Spinalonga convenient daily outings. If those are your priorities, put a second base closer to one of them.

Should we choose Elounda or Agios Nikolaos?

Choose the actual setting: a resort near Elounda or Plaka for days centred on its beach and facilities, or central Agios Nikolaos for restaurants and town life on foot. A resort north of Agios Nikolaos can be as self-contained as one carrying the Elounda name.

Make the final choice

Mark the two outings you care about most, then compare the airport journey and the walk from each hotel to your everyday beach or dinner. If those journeys fit, you have a base. Leave the other end of Crete for a second stay—or a second trip.
