Where to stay in Corfu: choose your coast, beach and base

For a first visit, choose Corfu Town for easy evenings and bus connections, Dassia for a beach base near town, or Paleokastritsa for scenery. Families seeking sand should compare the north and west coasts.

Choose your part of the island

These are stretches of coast containing different villages, rather than eight interchangeable neighbourhoods. A sea view above a bay, a room beside the beach and an apartment near a bus stop can produce very different holidays within the same group.

The airport and New Port are beside Corfu Town; Lefkimmi is a separate ferry port in the south. Numbers locate coastal groups; hotel points locate individual properties.

Without a car: Town is the easiest all-round base. Dassia and Benitses also work well when your room, beach and actual Blue Bus stop are within a comfortable walk. Kassiopi, Paleokastritsa, Acharavi or Agios Gordios can work for a holiday centred on one village; they require more planning if you want to cross the island every day.

1. Corfu Town

Choose Town for a short first visit, independent sightseeing and evenings you can enjoy on foot. You can step out for dinner without arranging a return transfer, and use buses for selected beach days. It suits travellers who want the town itself to be part of the holiday.

Bella Venezia’s pictured Master Suite has a separate sitting area; Cavalieri’s photograph shows its shared rooftop, whose bar and restaurant hours vary by season. Town bathing spots such as NAOK and Faliraki suit a dip, rather than a long sandy-beach day.

Stay close enough to the Old Town and San Rocco bus area to make your usual walk easy. A listing described simply as “Corfu Town” may sit well beyond the lanes you pictured. Kanoni is a separate choice farther south, near the airport and the views towards Vlacherna and Pontikonisi; it should not be treated as another Old Town address.

For a late arrival or early flight, Town is also a useful first or final night. If you have a hire car, establish where it can be parked and where luggage can be dropped before selecting a room deep inside the historic centre.

2. North-east: Barbati–Kassiopi

Choose the north-east for pebbled coves, waterfront meals and swimming beneath green hills. Couples will find small bays with an intimate feel; travellers who prefer a kitchen and a lively harbour can make Kassiopi their base. Decide which village you want before comparing hotels.

Barbati has a longer pebble beach, with accommodation spread between the shore and the rising hillside. Nissaki and Kalami are smaller-bay choices where the exact slope between your room, dinner and the water matters. Kassiopi, farther north, has a harbour and a wider choice of places to eat within a compact village. Staying in Kalami does not put Kassiopi’s evening restaurants on your doorstep.

San Antonio’s terraced Kalami setting involves changes of level. Kassiopi Bay provides maid service six days a week; its terraced grounds and shore steps make the allocated apartment’s position important.

You can stay without a car if you are happy using your own village’s beaches and restaurants, with occasional planned excursions. The A4 Green Bus is a link to Corfu Town, not a hop-on coastal shuttle. For hillside properties, check both the stop and the walk down to the accommodation. A car becomes more useful when the plan is a different cove every day.

3. Paleokastritsa

Choose Paleokastritsa when the scenery is the reason for coming: several coves, wooded headlands and viewpoints that reward staying beyond a quick day trip. It works especially well if you enjoy swimming and boat outings, and do not need a broad, level promenade.

Paleokastritsa spreads around separate bays: Agios Spyridon beach, Alipa harbour and the smaller coves have different hotel approaches.

The photographed Odysseus interior is the Suite Grand Sea View; its fridge and kettle are not a full kitchen. Zefiros’ photographed bedroom is its Classic Double “Cosy”.

For the walk to the water: Odysseus describes Platakia as 150 metres away down steps and the main beach as 350 metres away. Zefiros has four levels linked by external stairs. Compare those approaches with your needs if travelling with a pushchair, heavy luggage or limited mobility.

The A9 Green Bus makes a car-free stay possible if the hotel, swimming spots and meals you want are within your walking range. Allow for separate journeys to inland viewpoints: Lakones, above the coast, is not simply another beachfront address. Staying locally gives you time for a morning swim or an evening by the bays around your own schedule, as well as the boat outings.

4. Dassia–Gouvia–Kommeno

Choose this coast for a beach or resort stay with practical access to Town. It is a useful compromise when different people in the same party want pool time, restaurants and an occasional urban evening. The village and the hotel’s position within it still matter.

Dassia has a sand-and-fine-pebble shore with the main road and bus behind it. Gouvia has a compact bay, restaurants and marina, rather than Glyfada’s broad sand. Kontokali, just south, shares the access pattern, but Kontokali Bay’s sandy shore is a property-specific advantage.

Kontokali Bay’s Main Building Sea Front rooms have staircase access, despite their position by the shore.1

Kommeno is the quieter peninsula option. Resorts here can feel secluded even though the urban bus passes along the wider coastal road. The distance from that road to your reception is the important final part of the journey. Nearby Ipsos has a different, busier evening character; do not let a broad “Dassia area” search conceal that distinction.

Blue Bus 7 serves this corridor. For a car-free holiday, favour a property with a comfortable walk to the stop and the places you will use most often. A hotel shuttle can be useful, but check its actual timetable and booking conditions instead of building every evening around an assumed free ride.

5. Benitses–Moraitika–Messonghi

Choose this south-east corridor for village meals, accessible beach time and a choice between straightforward hotels and larger family resorts. Start by deciding whether you want Benitses’ Blue Bus connection or a stay farther south around Moraitika and Messonghi.

Benitses has a village, marina and mixed sand-and-pebble shore. Potamaki’s beach route crosses the coastal road. Blue Bus 6 serves Benitses and Tsaki Benitson, not the whole corridor down to Messonghi.

MarBella is at Agios Ioannis Peristeron, between Benitses and Moraitika. Its beach route uses steps or an underpass that the hotel describes as suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Confirm the route from the reserved room. The beach is public, while guest loungers and umbrellas are reserved.

Moraitika and Messonghi are neighbouring but distinct villages farther south. Their beach-and-taverna setting suits a stay with several low-effort days in the same place. Moraitika’s old village rises above the coastal strip; an address up there gives a different walk from one near the beach. Green Buses serve this part of the coast, with some departures terminating at named hotels rather than wherever a broad village search places your room.

If Achilleion is on your sightseeing list, the palace’s own current notice allows visits to the outdoor areas and Imperial Gardens while the interiors remain under restoration. Plan around the visit actually available.2

6. North: Sidari–Roda–Acharavi

Choose the north for a family beach holiday with places to eat and everyday supplies nearby. There are long shorelines and several different resort towns, so decide between a busy holiday centre, a compact village and a self-contained resort before looking at room photographs.

Sidari has the most distinct sightseeing hook: the sandstone formations of Canal d’Amour, west of the centre. Its bars and holiday entertainment give it a different evening feel from quieter stretches farther east. Sidari Beach Hotel is at Agios Ioannis, outside the centre; the hotel’s name does not place it beside Canal d’Amour.

Roda is the compact village option. Acharavi has a longer spread of accommodation and services; Almyros continues into a more resort-oriented stretch. Almyros Beach Resort is about two kilometres from Acharavi, across a small coastal road from the beach.

Sand is a reason to consider this coast, but pebbles occur along parts of it. Compare the actual hotel beach; Acharavi Beach Hotel keeps you in Acharavi rather than the Almyros resort stretch.

You can stay without a car in a walkable village or spend most of the week in a resort. The A2 bus serves Sidari; A3 serves Roda and Acharavi. Use the individual timetable for your village and return journey; these routes are not a frequent shuttle linking every northern hotel. A car is useful for exploring several towns and coves, but it is not compulsory for every northern stay.

7. West: Glyfada–Pelekas–Agios Gordios

Choose the west for sand, open sea and sunset views. Glyfada and Agios Gordios suit a holiday built around the beach; Pelekas suits a village stay above the coast. Those three choices should remain separate even when a booking site groups them together.

Glyfada is a beach below green slopes, with places to eat by the water. At Glyfada Beach Hotel, choose a named sea-view category; the hotel name does not promise a resort pool.

Pelekas is the hill village, with the elevated outlook that makes Levant appealing. It is not interchangeable with Glyfada or Kontogialos beach below. Blue Bus 11 serves Pelekas, but the village stop does not remove the descent to the sea or the climb back afterwards.

Agios Gordios, farther south, brings the village and a long sandy bay together beneath cliffs and a prominent sea stack. Agios Gordios Beach Resort suits travellers who want the actual beachfront location. Its photographed balcony pool belongs to the Deluxe Double Studio category; do not assume every room includes one.

The west’s exposed beaches can have wind and waves. Judge conditions on the day rather than assuming every morning is calm or every afternoon rough. For a car-free stay, choose accommodation close to the beach and meals you expect to use, then treat trips elsewhere as planned outings. The B17 to Glyfada and B10 to Agios Gordios have limited Sunday service in the current timetable.

Ella Álkyna occupies a beachfront hillside at Agios Gordios. Check the current guest-age policy and the route between your room and the beach; “beachfront” alone does not describe the changes of level within the resort.

Compare hotels in Agios Gordios

A further northwest option: Agios Georgios Pagon

If your main wish is a long sandy bay with smaller hotels or an apartment, compare Agios Georgios Pagon before settling on Glyfada or Agios Gordios. The northwestern beach has restaurants and small family hotels around the bay, which suits a week of swimming and meals locally. Choose this corner when those local days are the point of the holiday; keep a Town-focused short break in Town or on the nearer east coast. It is a separate resort from the Agios Georgios in southern Corfu, so use the full Pagon name when matching accommodation and transport.

8. Kavos

Choose Kavos when late bars and a social beach holiday are the point of the trip. It belongs in the comparison because it offers a different evening scene and a southern arrival plan. It is a specific resort town, not a label for the whole south of Corfu.

Nights out nearby

Erofili

Stay near central Kavos for the shortest walk home after a night out. Erofili is towards the edge, not beachfront. Check the room’s position relative to operating venues; an edge location alone does not establish quiet.

Kavos is a poor default for a short trip built around the Old Town or the northern coves. The B1 Green Bus connects it with Corfu Town, but this is a timetable-dependent journey rather than a late-night return option. Arrange the arrival transfer if your flight falls outside the useful bus window. If arriving from mainland Greece, compare the separate Lefkimmi ferry crossing with arrival at Corfu’s New Port.

The quieter south-west beaches, including Issos and Halikounas, offer another kind of day by the sea. They have not been folded into “Kavos” accommodation: sleeping near the nightlife and sleeping near those beaches are different decisions.

Arriving and getting around

For Town, start with Blue Bus 15 from the airport or New Port. For the farther coasts, check the onward Green Bus before choosing accommodation around a cheap transfer assumption. A late flight, a Sunday arrival or a hotel above the main road can change the sensible choice.

Bus routes, fares and the return journey

Blue Bus 15 links the airport, Green Bus terminal, San Rocco and New Port. For Dassia/Gouvia use line 7; for Benitses use line 6. Allow time to change buses and reach the actual stop. The Green Bus terminal is separate from San Rocco and from the airport terminal.

In the City Bus timetable effective 19 October 2026, line 7 has many departures around 30 minutes apart on weekday evenings and around 40 minutes apart on Sundays, with variations. Line 6 gaps commonly range from 30 to 60 minutes. The last listed departures back towards Town are 23:35 from Ipsos on line 7 and 23:10 from Benitses on line 6; these are endpoint times, not the passing time at your hotel’s stop.

In the line 15 timetable effective 24 October 2026, the last listed direct airport-to-port departure is 21:30; later airport departures at 22:20 and 22:45 end at San Rocco. These are different destinations, so choose the service for your actual arrival address.

The City Bus ticket page lists €1.30 for a Zone A single including the airport–Town–port corridor, €1.80 for a Zone B single including Dassia, Ipsos and Benitses, and a €5 daily ticket. Ordinary singles cover one trip. Buy before boarding where possible; the on-board price is higher. Check the daily ticket’s validity conditions rather than assuming it lasts 24 hours.3

The Green Bus examples below come from the operator’s timetable effective 17 October 2026. Prices are regular one-way fares in euros, from Corfu; they are not transfer-package prices. The table distinguishes departures from Corfu from returns towards Corfu. All times are in local Greek time. Confirm the date, stop and return trip close to travel.4

Base and Green BusOne-way fareA useful limit in that timetable
Kassiopi, A4€4.30Last return 19:50 Monday–Saturday; 18:40 Sunday.
Paleokastritsa, A9€2.80Last return 20:00; fewer early departures on Sunday.
Sidari, A2€4.10Three outward departures from Corfu on Sunday.
Roda–Acharavi, A3€4.40Three outward departures from Corfu on Sunday; check the stop-specific return.
Moraitika–Messonghi, B7€2.70Main schedule names Messonghi Hotel; additional Gemini–Apollo services are separate.
Glyfada, B17€2.70Sunday: Corfu departures 11:00 and 18:00; returns 12:00 and 19:00.
Agios Gordios, B10€2.70Sunday: Corfu departures 11:00 and 18:00; returns 11:35 and 18:35.
Kavos, B1€5.30Sunday: Corfu departures 09:00 and 17:00; returns 10:30 and 18:30.

For rough journey planning, KTEL’s individual route pages estimate 50 minutes to Paleokastritsa, 1 hour 15 minutes to Kassiopi and 1 hour 30 minutes to Kavos, from Corfu’s intercity terminal. These are operator estimates on undated route pages, not timings in the dated timetable; allow for traffic, stops and any airport connection.

Blue Bus schedules also change: the operator’s notice effective 19 October specifies that the weekday 09:30 and 12:00 line 11 departures end at Pelekas village square. That is useful for the village, not a beach transfer.

Green Buses’ current timetable page says on-board tickets can be paid by card or cash.4 Waiting and changing buses can be a substantial part of the airport-to-hotel journey. Do not use a scheduled departure interval as a travel-time estimate, or assume a late bus in one resort means a late bus in another.

Ferries, a car on the ferry and road transfers

From Igoumenitsa on the mainland, compare the car-ferry route to Corfu New Port with the separate route to Lefkimmi. Kerkyra Seaways sells vehicle tickets for the Corfu route; Lefkimmi Lines and Lefkimmi Ferries publish the southern crossing. Select the sailing date and vehicle dimensions with the operator. The arrival port can matter as much as the crossing price, especially for Kavos and the south.

Some Italy–Greece sailings also call at Corfu. Check the exact Corfu call and any revised schedule with the operator, including Superfast; a ticket to a Greek mainland port does not itself include arrival on the island.5 Compare cabin, passenger and vehicle charges for the same sailing rather than using a permanent “from” fare.

For a road transfer, request a quote to the actual property and provide flight or ferry arrival details. Include the permitted final drop-off and any walk to reception.

Hire a car for the days when exploring justifies it. Compare the total for your dates, insurance/excess terms, collection location and transmission. A fixed August weekly price is not a useful year-round assumption. If taking a rental car on a ferry, check the rental agreement and ferry permission with the rental company as well as buying the vehicle ticket.

Package holiday or independent trip?

A package can suit a week centred on one resort, especially when the transfer and meal plan remove work you do not want to do. Independent booking gives more control over the village, the room category and a stay divided between Town and a coast.

Compare like with like: flights, baggage, airport transfers, the same room occupancy, meals, cancellation terms and the accommodation fee. Read the actual hotel address behind a broad “Corfu” label. A transfer to a remote resort is useful; it does not make that resort a convenient base for daily evenings elsewhere.

What to allow for beyond the room price

Greece’s Climate Resilience Fee depends on the accommodation’s legal category and the season. It is charged in euros per room or apartment per day of use, rather than per guest.6 Check your booking’s price breakdown and payment terms so you know what is included in the displayed total and what remains to be paid.

Current accommodation-fee amounts
Hotel categoryApr–OctNov–Mar
1–2 stars€2€0.50
3 stars€5€1.50
4 stars€10€3
5 stars€15€4

Licensed furnished rooms/apartments are a separate €2 / €0.50 category. Short-term rentals are €8 / €2, rising to €15 / €4 for a detached single-family short-let house above 80 m². Registered tourist villas are €15 / €4, independently of that short-let size rule. Registered furnished tourist residences are €8 / €2 below 80 m², or €15 / €4 at 80 m² and above. In each pair, the first amount is April–October and the second November–March.

The legal category matters more than the marketing word “villa” or “apartment”. The accommodation issues a separate fee receipt; stays crossing months with different rates require the applicable monthly treatment. For example, seven daily uses of one five-star room in the April–October period total €105, irrespective of whether one or two guests occupy it.6

Match the base to the season

For a summer beach trip, choose the beach and daily walk first, then compare the hotel. Allow flexibility for hot days, changing sea conditions and busy roads instead of filling every day with a journey across the island.

For spring or autumn, Town is the more resilient choice when restaurants, sightseeing and public transport matter more than a full resort programme. A coastal stay can still work well: confirm the hotel’s operating dates, which pools or restaurants will be open, and the actual bus timetable for the stay. A hotel listing does not by itself confirm that every seasonal facility is running.

For a short trip, one well-chosen base usually saves more time than moving luggage. On a longer holiday, a Town stay plus one coast can create a useful change of pace. Split north and south only if the places you want to visit justify a second check-in; you do not need to collect areas to enjoy Corfu.

Questions that help you choose

Where should I stay in Corfu without a car?

Town gives the most flexible combination of walking and bus connections. For a beach stay, look closely at Dassia or Benitses and the exact walk to the stop. Other villages can work if you plan to stay locally and choose excursions around their Green Bus timetables.

Which coast is best for children who want sand?

Start with the actual shore at Glyfada, Agios Gordios, Acharavi or Almyros, then compare pool facilities, the walk to meals and any road crossing. Some east-coast hotels also have sandy beach areas. A coast-wide label is less useful than the sand and access outside the property you are booking.

Is Paleokastritsa better than Kassiopi?

Paleokastritsa suits a holiday built around dramatic bays and viewpoints. Kassiopi suits harbour evenings and an independent village stay with nearby coves. Choose between the daily rhythm you prefer, then check the hotel’s slope and beach access.

Can I book a sea-view room and expect easy beach access?

Check both separately. An elevated balcony may give a beautiful outlook while requiring steps or a steep walk to the shore. Likewise, a resort pool photograph may show a private pool attached to a particular suite. The room category and route to the water are part of the choice.

Is Kavos a good base for the whole island?

It makes sense when its nightlife and southern location are what you want. For a short trip focused on Town, Paleokastritsa or the northern coves, a base closer to those places will reduce the transport planning.
