Where to stay in Malaga: choose between the centre and the beach
For a first visit, stay around Málaga’s historic centre or Soho. Choose La Malagueta for the beach, María Zambrano for train trips, or Pedregalejo and El Palo when seafront meals matter more than walking to museums.

Find your base on the map
Start with the historic centre and Soho for city walks. The coast runs east through La Malagueta and La Caleta to Pedregalejo and El Palo; María Zambrano is the separate rail base. The farther-east beach areas make seafront meals easier, with a bus journey back to the museums.

Stations, sights & hotels
1. Centro Histórico: museums, tapas and walking
The historic centre works particularly well for a short stay: you can walk between the Picasso Museum, cathedral, Alcazaba and Atarazanas Market. Around Calle Granada and Plaza de la Merced, dinner can easily turn into a late evening out.
Superior roomH10 Croma Málaga
Superior rooms add furnished terraces beside the historic centre’s western edge.View on BookingFor H10 Croma Málaga, Centro-Alameda is the practical airport-train stop. The pictured Superior Room has a furnished terrace. Family Rooms accommodate two adults and two children, but only most have a terrace; specify it if that is part of your choice.
Around Calle Granada and Plaza de la Merced, ask about the actual room’s outlook, glazing and air conditioning: an internal courtyard can be active, and a roof bar can bring noise from above.
Central pedestrian lanes also affect arrival with luggage. Ask for the nearest permitted drop-off rather than assuming a taxi can reach the front door.
Another central option
- Petit Palace Plaza Málaga — quadruple rooms on pedestrian Calle Nicasio Calle, off Calle Larios. The standard Quadruple combines a double or twin beds with bunks; Superior Quadruple has four singles. Air conditioning and heating are seasonal.2

2. Soho and the port edge: murals and rooftop evenings
Soho occupies the streets south of Alameda Principal and west of Plaza de la Marina. It suits an evening around the neighbourhood’s restaurants, murals and rooftops, with the old town just across the Alameda. Muelle Uno is a separate waterfront area, reached across the main roads and along the harbour.
Standard roomRoom Mate Valeria
Colourful Standard rooms at Soho’s eastern edge, near Plaza de la Marina.View on BookingAt Valeria, the harbour panorama belongs to the shared rooftop; its plunge pool is seasonal.
Rooftop terraceCatalonia Molina Lario
Cathedral-side rooms and harbour views from a shared rooftop terrace.View on BookingCatalonia Molina Lario is a cathedral-side alternative at Calle Molina Lario 20, outside Soho proper. Harbour views are from the common terrace; a Superior room includes a balcony or terrace.
From Plaza de la Marina, the Palmeral de las Sorpresas leads towards the glass cube of the Centre Pompidou and Muelle Uno. It is a harbour promenade, so a waterfront address here is different from a hotel beside a swimming beach.
For MUCAC exhibitions, head to La Coracha on Paseo de Reding. The former CAC building at Mayoristas in Soho remains temporarily closed; it should not be the reason you choose a nearby hotel.

3. La Malagueta and La Caleta: beach first, with the city nearby
Choose this stretch when you want a swim or a seafront walk to be part of an ordinary morning. La Malagueta begins beside the port; La Caleta continues east. The bullring end is closer to the central sights, while addresses farther along Paseo de Sancha add distance to each museum outing.
Garden poolGran Hotel Miramar
Gardens and seasonal pools by the sea; select sea-view rooms separately.View on BookingAt Gran Hotel Miramar, outdoor pools are seasonal. A sea view needs a named sea-view room category: Premier rooms can face the city or gardens, while Premier Atrium faces the interior. The sea-view chill-out area is for guests over 16.
Superior roomBYPILLOW California
A smaller La Caleta hotel with a lift and shared roof terrace.View on BookingBYPILLOW California, at Paseo de Sancha 17 in La Caleta, is the smaller hotel option. It has a lift, 24-hour reception and a shared roof terrace. The pictured Superior room has air conditioning; a private terrace requires Superior Terrace. There is no pool. Its published conditions include a €100 refundable card deposit, with return subject to inspection.
California: parking, extra bed and cot charges
Parking is €14 per day, subject to availability. An extra bed is €35 per person per night on request; a cot is free on request. Include children in the booking, as an extra bed is not automatic capacity.
The beach is public urban shoreline with dark sand, restaurants and a promenade. For arriving with bags, the airport bus to Parque–Torrijos suits the western end; California is farther east, where city bus 11 becomes useful. The detailed routes are below.
Another hotel in La Caleta
- Petit Palace Las Vegas — an outdoor pool and family-room options at Paseo de Sancha 22. Previously called Soho Boutique Las Vegas, it stands in La Caleta, east of the bullring.

4. María Zambrano and El Perchel: easy rail arrivals
Stay here if you arrive by long-distance train, leave early, or intend to make several rail day trips. María Zambrano brings together high-speed trains and Cercanías, with the intercity bus station and El Perchel metro nearby. The surrounding streets are a working city neighbourhood rather than the old town.
Rooftop poolBarceló Málaga
Stay inside the station complex, with a shared rooftop pool.View on BookingBarceló estimates about 20 minutes on foot to Calle Larios; allow longer with bags or children.
For the old town, metro line 1 runs from El Perchel via Guadalmedina to Atarazanas. Those are metro stations; Centro-Alameda is a separate Renfe station. The airport C1 train calls at María Zambrano before continuing to Centro-Alameda, so there is no reason to stay on until the terminus for Barceló.
For Córdoba or another rail day trip, match a timed activity to the actual train you book.
Another station-side option
- Eurostars Málaga — at Héroe de Sostoa 17, with a separate Family Room category for up to four and an on-site garage. Its entrance is on the street.

5. Pedregalejo: waterfront meals and room for a family
Pedregalejo’s breakwaters divide the shore into small beach sections, with restaurants along the promenade and fishing boats pulled up on the sand. Stay here for an evening of grilled fish by the water; allow a bus journey when you want the central museums.
Seafront hot tubLa Chancla
A waterfront terrace and shared hot tub overlook Pedregalejo beach.View on BookingAt La Chancla, bedroom sea views depend on availability; confirm one before booking for that outlook. The hotel uses Calle Cenacheros 54, while Booking lists the seafront address Paseo Marítimo El Pedregal 64: ask which approach to use with luggage.
Executive living roomBe Mate Málaga Playa
Executive apartments add a kitchen and washing machine for four guests.View on BookingThe Executive apartment at Be Mate Málaga Playa, Calle Varadero 2, adds a washing machine and air conditioning to the four-person, two-bedroom kitchen layout. The building lists a lift; a terrace belongs to a separately named category. Send your arrival time in advance and confirm how to collect the keys; the operator provides online support.
Bus 11 follows the Juan Sebastián Elcano corridor inland from the beach. From there, the last leg to these properties is towards the seafront. Restaurant terraces are part of the appeal, so the promenade is not a guarantee of a silent evening.
A smaller conventional hotel
- Elcano — a family-run, 12-room hotel on Avenida Juan Sebastián Elcano 103, with a lift. Arrange a late arrival: the published reception window is 09:00–16:00.

6. El Palo: a farther-east base for self-catering
El Palo lies beyond Pedregalejo, with its own beach sections, seafood restaurants and neighbourhood market. It makes sense for a stay built around the shore and cooking at home. For a short trip packed with central sights, the repeated journey west can outweigh the benefit of a kitchen.
Apartment kitchenApartamentos El Palo
Adults-only apartments near El Palo market, with kitchens and washing machines.View on BookingApartamentos El Palo, Calle Valparaíso 9, is an adults-only choice: each of its three published categories accommodates a maximum of two. The photograph shows the ground-floor apartment; the penthouse is on the second floor without a lift. If you need step-free access, ask the host to confirm the route from the street to the ground-floor apartment.
Check-in is 15:30–20:00, with departure by 10:00. Agree late access in advance if your flight arrives in the evening. For a family apartment, the Be Mate option in the preceding Pedregalejo section has a four-person layout.
The municipal market on Calle Alonso Carrillo de Albornoz opens Monday to Saturday, 08:00–15:00. Bus 11 continues here after Pedregalejo; use the stop for your actual address rather than getting off at the first eastern beach.

From the airport to your accommodation
Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) has a Cercanías C1 railway connection to the city. Follow the train signs to the airport station and take the direction Málaga Centro-Alameda. The scheduled ride is about nine minutes to María Zambrano or 12 minutes to Centro-Alameda. Add the terminal walk, waiting and the final journey to your accommodation.
A standard airport-to-city single fare is €1.80. Buy at the station or use Renfe’s Cronos contactless system: validate the same card or payment device at entry and exit. The current timetable lists citybound airport departures from 06:44 to 00:54, mostly every 20 minutes during the day, with longer gaps early and late.4
The Express A airport bus costs €4 each way, with baggage included. It serves Alameda Principal and the Parque stops, useful for the port and western Malagueta. Pay on board by cash or bank card, or use an EMT app QR ticket. On the bus, tap a bank card only when boarding. Ordinary city-bus passes do not cover A, and its single ticket does not include a free onward transfer.
Airport routes by base
| Your base | Airport connection | Final leg |
|---|---|---|
| Centro Histórico | C1 to Centro-Alameda | Walk towards Alameda Principal and the old town; for H10 continue towards Atarazanas and Calle Prim. Pedestrian addresses may need a luggage walk. |
| Soho / cathedral-side port edge | C1 to Centro-Alameda, or A to Alameda Principal / Parque–Pl. Marina | Cross Soho to Valeria’s plaza; for Molina Lario, continue from Plaza de la Marina to Calle Molina Lario 20. Muelle Uno is farther around the harbour. |
| Malagueta / Caleta | A to Parque–Torrijos for the western end; or C1 followed by city bus 11 | Continue along Paseo de Reding for Miramar. For California, bus 11’s Paseo de Sancha–La Caleta stop serves the right corridor, then walk to number 17. |
| María Zambrano | C1 to María Zambrano | Follow the station/Vialia route to Barceló; use the street exit for Eurostars. |
| Pedregalejo | C1 to Centro-Alameda, then 11 from Alameda Principal–Sur towards El Palo | Leave the Elcano corridor for Calle Varadero or the Pedregal/Cenacheros waterfront. |
| El Palo | The same C1 + 11 connection, continuing beyond Pedregalejo | Leave the bus in El Palo and walk to your address; Valparaíso 9 is by the market area. |
An ordinary EMT single costs €1.40, without a free transfer.4 For several city journeys, the 10-trip reload is €5 during 2026, with changes of line within one hour; the physical card is separate and A is excluded.
Late arrival: Express A is not continuous overnight; use the operator’s date-specific timetable for your flight. After the last airport train or bus, take a licensed taxi from the rank. Taxis are metered, with airport minimums and supplements rather than one price for all these bases. N1 serves the eastern districts at night from the city, not from the airport; check its timetable before planning a connection.
Booking totals, admissions and driving
The current regional and municipal tax schedules show no separate nightly visitor levy for Málaga. Hotel accommodation normally carries 10% VAT; holiday lets without hotel-type services can be exempt. Compare the final booking total, including applicable taxes and compulsory charges. Breakfast and parking depend on the rate, and a refundable deposit is different from a nightly charge.
Museum admission prices, free periods and reservations
These admission figures are per person, at the general adult rate unless stated otherwise.5
| Visit | General admission | Free admission and useful conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Alcazaba / Gibralfaro | €7 each; €10 combined | Free for under-6s and on Sundays from 14:00. Reduced €3 / €5 combined for the eligible categories listed below. Last entry is one hour before closing. |
| Museo Picasso Málaga | €13 | Under-17s free; everyone free in the final two hours on Sundays. Closing time changes with the season, so the free period moves. |
| Museo Carmen Thyssen | €12, or €15 with the archaeological site | Under-18s free (under-13s accompanied); Sunday free entry from 16:00. The archaeological site needs a reservation. Check shortened Feria/holiday hours. Normally closed Mondays, with listed holiday exceptions. |
| Centre Pompidou Málaga | €9 combined, €7 semipermanent or €4 temporary exhibition | Under-18s free; Sunday free entry from 16:00. Online purchases add a €0.30 handling charge. Normally closed Tuesdays, with public-holiday/eve exceptions. |
Alcazaba and Gibralfaro: reduced admission eligibility
The Alcazaba/Gibralfaro reduced categories include European Youth Card holders; EU citizens who are over 65, retired, legally unemployed or students; people with at least 33% disability; and large-family-card holders. Take the relevant proof.
Gibralfaro has a separate uphill approach via Paseo de Don Juan Temboury, or city bus 35. Allow time between the two monuments.
Several free Sunday periods overlap. Choose the museum you most want to see and check its last admission, rather than trying to fit every venue into the same afternoon. MUCAC La Coracha currently has free admission, Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–20:00; the Mayoristas building in Soho remains closed.
Arriving by car
Málaga suspended enforcement of ZBE entry restrictions from 14 October 2026 following a court ruling, while the judgment’s finality was still pending in the council’s notice. Pedestrian-street controls and other traffic rules remain separate. Check the current municipal notice and obtain your hotel’s garage approach before driving in.6
When the calendar changes the best address
Semana Santa processions affect both pedestrian routes and road access around the old town, Alameda and the port approaches. A central room is valuable if the processions are the reason for your visit; when arriving with luggage, get your hotel’s instructions for that specific day.
August’s Feria brings celebrations to the historic centre as well as the fairground at Cortijo de Torres. A room near the central festivities suits a different trip from one planned around early nights. Ask about the room’s position and your arrival route before committing to an address on a busy square.
For a winter city break, choose for the walks and museums you will use; a seasonal rooftop pool need not decide the booking.
Questions that help settle the choice
Can I combine sightseeing and a beach without moving hotels?
Yes. Soho and the western end of La Malagueta are useful compromises. Choose the old-town side for museum mornings, or the bullring/port end of Malagueta if you want the beach first. California and other La Caleta addresses sit farther east, so compare the actual address rather than the broad beach label.
Which option works for a family that wants a kitchen?
The Executive apartment at Be Mate Málaga Playa in Pedregalejo has two bedrooms and space for four. If a kitchen is unnecessary and you prefer central sightseeing, Petit Palace Plaza Málaga has quadruple categories. Apartamentos El Palo is adults-only and is not a family substitute.
Is the station area worthwhile for just one night?
It is especially practical when one end of the stay involves an early or late train. Barceló’s direct station connection keeps the luggage leg simple. If both days are devoted to central sightseeing and your trains are at convenient hours, Centro Histórico gives you more time on foot between sights.
Can I stay in Pedregalejo or El Palo without a car?
Yes, with bus 11 for city trips and a suitable arrival plan. These are separate bases along the eastern coast, and El Palo is farther from the centre. Factor in the walk between the bus corridor and the accommodation, and arrange access if an apartment host has a limited check-in window.
How many nights should I allow?
Three nights can give you two full days for the old town, a museum and time by the sea. Add a night if you want a rail day trip or several unhurried beach days. For a stay of only two nights, the centre or Soho usually keeps more of your time available for the city.
If you are still undecided, start with a central address for a short first visit. Move east when the beach, a kitchen or seafront evenings will shape most of your stay; choose the station when the train timetable will.
