Where to stay in Valencia: old town, local neighbourhoods or the beach

Stay in Ciutat Vella for a first visit centred on the Cathedral and Central Market. Choose Ruzafa for evenings out, the station area for a practical apartment, or Las Arenas when the beach shapes your days.

Find your base on the map

The historic centre sits inside the bend of the Turia gardens, with Ruzafa and the railway stations to its south. The Arts complex and seafront are separate bases farther east; use the closer map views to compare central neighbourhoods.

Numbers match the seven areas. Choose a closer view for central neighbourhoods or the seafront; symbols mark sights and stations. Move the map with two fingers.

1. Ciutat Vella: the old town, including El Carmen

For two or three nights built around Valencia’s historic sights, this is the most convenient starting point. El Mercat puts you by the Central Market and La Lonja; La Seu brings you towards the Cathedral and Plaza de la Virgen. Sant Francesc, around City Hall, is closer to València Nord station.

Staying in El Carmen

El Carmen belongs to Ciutat Vella, rather than being another district to commute from. Its lanes connect the Serranos and Quart towers, museums, small squares and evening bars. Stay here if those evenings are part of the attraction. If sleep comes first, ask about the exact room’s exposure to nearby venues and any events during your dates. An inward-facing room can still receive sound from a courtyard.

Old buildings also need address-specific questions: does the lift reach your floor, and are there steps between the entrance, lift and room? A central location alone does not answer them.

Two more old-town options
  • River Hostel — Dorms and private rooms beside the Turia; all have shared bathrooms.
  • Ad Hoc Carmen — Private-bathroom rooms near El Carmen; family duplexes have internal stairs.

2. Ruzafa: restaurants, cafés and evenings out

Ruzafa, also written Russafa, suits a stay that leaves time between sightseeing and dinner. The market, independent shops and restaurant streets give you reasons to return during the day. Ruzafa is part of the wider Eixample district.

For a local food stop, look for an esmorzaret: Valencia’s substantial mid-morning meal, often built around a sandwich. Mercat de Russafa is the food market here; Mercado de Colón, in the next area, is better thought of as a place for cafés and restaurants.

Bar terraces and evening activity are part of Ruzafa’s appeal. Choose the room as carefully as the street if you plan early nights.

3. Gran Via and Pla del Remei: Mercado de Colón and the eastern centre

Choose this part of Eixample if you like a regular street grid, Modernist buildings and cafés around Mercado de Colón. It gives you a central base between the old town, Ruzafa and the Turia without putting your room in the medieval lanes. Broad avenues still carry traffic, so the district name is no guarantee of quiet.

The cafés at Mercado de Colón are an easy place to pause for horchata or an evening drink. For grocery shopping and cooking in an apartment, use a food market or supermarket.

4. El Pla del Real: a hotel beside the Turia

Across the old riverbed, El Pla del Real works for travellers who want park walks as part of the day. The area includes Viveros gardens and Mestalla stadium. You can walk towards the historic centre, while the evening restaurant choice is less concentrated than in Ruzafa.

Westin’s children’s pool hours are 09:00–12:00 and 15:00–18:00, with changes possible during holidays. Confirm the applicable hours if swimming with children matters.

The Turia is a long park. Choose your walking route to the part you want to use. On a football trip, this is also the natural area to compare for Mestalla; check match-day activity before choosing a room facing the stadium approach.

5. The station area: La Roqueta and the Ruzafa edge

This is a practical choice for an arrival by rail, an early departure or a stay with a kitchenette. La Roqueta is the southern part of Extramurs beside València Nord. Other parts of Extramurs, including Botànic and La Petxina, extend farther around the western side of the old town: an Extramurs address is not automatically beside the stations.

For a family: Soho’s pictured Loft Studio has a double bed for two adults and a sofa bed for up to two children under 12, plus a kitchenette and private bathroom. Enter the children’s actual ages when selecting your rate. The property is on the Ruzafa side of Gran Via de les Germanies.

For more space or a late arrival: the larger Open Mind is open-plan, with no separate bedroom. Reception is published as 09:00–23:00; arrange arrivals outside those hours with the property.

Check the station printed on your ticket. València Nord and València Joaquín Sorolla are different stations, linked by a signed, open-air pedestrian corridor. Allow for luggage, the walk through the stations and your train’s boarding arrangements.

6. City of Arts and Sciences: museums and modern hotels

Stay here when the Oceanogràfic, science museum and contemporary architecture will occupy a large part of your trip. The Turia gardens run into the complex, making this a useful family base for those days. For repeated visits to the Cathedral and Central Market, a central neighbourhood is more convenient.

AC’s Triple room accommodates up to three guests. The hotel is on the Penya-roja side of the complex, at Avenida de Francia 67 in Camins al Grau.

The attraction area crosses district boundaries. Quatre Carreres covers much more than the museum complex, while hotels across the water and gardens can be in Camins al Grau. Look at the actual address and the walk to the attraction you intend to visit. Line 10 serves the complex, but its stop is not beside every hotel carrying an Arts-and-Sciences location label.

7. Cabanyal and the seafront: Las Arenas and Malvarrosa

Choose the coast when you want beach time to be effortless and are happy to travel into the historic centre. Cabanyal-Canyamelar is the neighbourhood of tiled houses, markets and maritime history behind the waterfront. A listing there may be several streets inland. The two hotels below are specifically on the Las Arenas seafront, near the Marina.

Balandret’s pictured Deluxe Vista Mar is a sea-view double for one or two guests; other categories face the street or an interior patio. For a larger party, compare the Junior Suite’s double-bed-and-sofa-bed layout with your actual occupancy.

Las Arenas has a heated indoor pool separate from its two seasonal outdoor pools. The hotel’s published 2026 outdoor opening period is 27 March–1 November; check the new season for a later trip. Sea-view terraces depend on the room category.5

What about Malvarrosa?

Malvarrosa continues north along the urban beachfront. The distinction is useful when choosing an address: a stay farther north has a different final walk and public-transport stop from a hotel beside the Marina. Treat the promenade, the inland neighbourhood and the beach as connected but distinct places.

For the historic centre, the rail route from the Marina side uses tram 8 and metro 5 with a change at Marítim. Your total journey also includes getting to the stop, waiting and walking at the other end. A city bus may suit a particular address better.

Arriving and getting to your hotel

From Valencia Airport (VLC)

Metrovalencia lines 3 and 5 connect Aeroport with the city. A single for the airport-inclusive AB+ journey costs €4.80 per person. If you need a new anonymous cardboard transport card, add €1.10, making €5.90 for one single plus a new card. Keep the card for reloading. A city-only ticket does not cover the airport.

For several rides, SUMA 10 AB+ is a separate integrated ticket: €12.60 for ten journeys under the reduction running through 31 December 2026, plus the card if needed. Check the applicable fare for a later trip.6

Allow for the train ride, the wait, any transfer and the walk to your hotel. Consult the date-specific Metrovalencia timetable for an early departure or late arrival.

Metro routes by area
  • Ciutat Vella: L3/L5 to Àngel Guimerà, Xàtiva or Colón, depending on the address, then walk into the old town. The Cathedral and El Carmen are beyond the metro stops.
  • Ruzafa or the station area: L3/L5 to Xàtiva, then walk towards the appropriate side of Nord and Gran Via de les Germanies.
  • Gran Via / Pla del Remei: L3/L5 to Colón or Alameda. Choose the stop from the hotel’s actual address; Hospes is by Puerta del Mar.
  • El Pla del Real: L3/L5 to Alameda, then continue across the riverbed area towards your hotel. Westin is on Amadeo de Saboya.
  • City of Arts and Sciences: L3/L5 to Xàtiva, the pedestrian link to Alacant, then L10 to the complex. The hotel may still be some distance from the stop. For AC, L5 to Ayora offers another approach followed by a walk south.
  • Las Arenas / Marina: L5 to Marítim, then tram L8 to Neptú and a walk along the waterfront. This works for Balandret and Las Arenas; farther-north beach addresses need a different last leg.

Bus 150 is the airport service operated by Fernanbús within MetGo/MetroBús, separate from EMT’s city buses. The airport single is €4.80, and an appropriate airport-inclusive SUMA ticket is another option. The city terminus is Avinguda de l’Oest–Hospital, on the western side of the centre. The published daytime timetable has no service on Sundays or public holidays. Bring small cash if buying on board. Check the current operator timetable and your destination stop before choosing it with luggage.

An official taxi is useful when the final walk is awkward or several people are sharing. Airport departures carry a €5.40 supplement and a €12.50 minimum fare that already includes that supplement. It is not €12.50 plus €5.40. The final metered fare depends on the journey and applicable time tariff; request a receipt.6

From the railway stations

Check whether your ticket names València Nord or València Joaquín Sorolla, including any change of station between connecting trains. Services can be reassigned during railway works.

The pedestrian connection between them opened on 30 June 2025 and is open-air. Adif describes the corridor as 400 metres, or about seven minutes on foot; that is the corridor itself, so allow extra time to reach your platform. The separate underground connection between Xàtiva and Alacant is the one used for changing to tram line 10.7

For a bag drop before check-in, ask your accommodation first. If you use an independent storage service near a station, check its opening hours, bag-size terms and collection deadline before paying.

Booking details that can change the choice

The total price

Valencia currently has no regional overnight tourist tax. The regional tax approved in 2022 was repealed before taking effect. You may still pay for extras in your booking terms, such as breakfast, parking, a deposit or a particular spa service; compare the final total for the same dates and room arrangement.

Apartment registration and unusual payment requests

For apartments, check the property name, address and the appropriate regional tourism registration. Tourist dwellings, managed apartment establishments and hotels are different categories, so one universal code format is not a reliable test for every stay. A registration number also needs to match the accommodation you are booking.8

Hosts may need your details for guest registration. That does not make an unsolicited request for a passport scan or a new payment link trustworthy. Verify unusual requests through the property’s established contact channel and follow the payment terms shown in your booking.8

Fallas and sleep

Fallas builds through March towards the celebrations on 19 March. Firecrackers, street installations and access restrictions can affect the walk from a taxi or bus to your entrance. If you are coming for the festival, ask the hotel which nearby events affect its rooms and where you should arrive with luggage. If you want quiet nights, avoid dates with major festival events.

Use the official programme and the city’s traffic notices for your travel year. A room away from a bar street cannot insulate you from a neighbourhood-wide festival.9

Bringing a car

A central stay rarely needs one. If you do bring a car, confirm parking and the permitted approach with the property before following navigation into the old town. Ciutat Vella Nord has its own restricted-access area, separate from the wider low-emission-zone process. Registration or authorisation for one scheme does not automatically settle the other. Check the city’s current rules for your vehicle and dates.9

For everyday outings, keep valuables secure in crowded streets and public transport. Choose accommodation by its specific entrance, surroundings and access arrangements rather than treating a whole neighbourhood as uniformly quiet or safe.

Questions to settle before booking

Is a beach hotel a mistake on a first visit?

No. It is a good choice if mornings by the sea matter more than walking straight out to the Cathedral. For a short sightseeing itinerary, the extra city crossings usually favour a central base.

Where should a family needing a kitchenette start?

Start with the station-area apartment option, then compare the actual beds, children’s ages and bedroom layout. If the Oceanogràfic is the main event, also compare the Arts area. A larger open-plan studio does not provide the privacy of a separate bedroom.

Which choice works for an early train?

Choose the correct station first. A hotel advertised as close to Nord may still require a walk to Joaquín Sorolla. Check the route from the hotel entrance to the departure station, including your luggage and boarding time.

Where can I look for a lower total cost?

Compare the station vicinity and Extramurs with the old town for your exact dates. If shared facilities are acceptable, River Hostel keeps a central location; its private rooms also use shared bathrooms. Apartment cooking can help a longer stay, but check cleaning charges and the minimum stay.

Does a longer stay change the shortlist?

It can. Benimaclet, northeast of the centre, is worth considering for a neighbourhood-based stay, university visits or time with people living there. For a first two-night sightseeing trip, the central bases above make the daily route simpler. Choose from actual listings and transport connections rather than assuming Benimaclet is always cheaper.
