Where to Stay in Paris: Choose the Right Area for Your Trip

For a first visit, start near the Louvre or in the Marais. Choose Grenelle for an apartment with a kitchen, or Montmartre for hilltop atmosphere and a hillside approach.

Choose your Paris base

The Seine is the useful dividing line: the Right Bank lies to its north and the Left Bank to its south. The numbered areas below are practical groups of neighbourhoods, sometimes crossing arrondissement boundaries.

Select an area; symbols mark sights and stations. Move the map with two fingers.

More sights, stations & hotels

1. Louvre, Opéra and Grands Boulevards

Choose this group for museum days, covered passages and an easy return to the hotel between visits. The Louvre and Palais Royal end favours the river and historic centre. Opéra and Richelieu–Drouot put department stores, theatres and the Grands Boulevards closer to your door.

At L’Empire Paris, the Superior category gives two guests 25 m², a courtyard outlook and air conditioning. The 45 m² Quadruple Deluxe takes four, with two individual sofa beds alongside the main bed. If access matters, request a suitable room: the Joséphine Suite involves a wooden staircase.

At Citadines Opéra, the 33 m² one-bedroom apartment takes four; a studio takes two. The kitchen includes a hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. Weekly housekeeping is included and daily cleaning costs extra. Air conditioning is listed as operating from 1 June to 30 September. The photograph shows an Executive apartment, whose layout can differ from the standard one-bedroom category.

Choose the nearest useful station, rather than treating this whole area as one transport hub: Les Halles suits L’Empire, while Richelieu–Drouot suits Citadines. Montorgueil and the Grands Boulevards have evening restaurants and bars; ask about the actual bedroom outlook if you want an early night. The Eiffel Tower and Montmartre still need their own journeys.

2. Le Marais and Île Saint-Louis

Choose the Marais for independent shops, galleries and dinner followed by a drink. Choose Île Saint-Louis for an island address and riverside walks between the Marais and Latin Quarter. The island has no Metro station: the last part of an arrival crosses a bridge on foot.

At Jules & Jim, the 17 m² HI-Macs rooms take two; the courtyard versions have balconies, while the six street-facing versions have windows that do not open. All have air conditioning. Confirm the room allocation if either feature matters. The courtyard is also the hotel’s cocktail-bar setting, with a published 23:00 closing time. Two ground-floor Jim rooms are adapted for wheelchair users; access elsewhere depends on the building and room.

At Hôtel des Deux Îles, the courtyard-facing Charmante is 14.5 m² for two, with a double or twin arrangement and individual air conditioning. The hotel has a lift, but says it has no adapted room and is not wheelchair accessible. Its position on rue Saint-Louis en l’Île suits walks across Pont Marie and towards Notre-Dame.

The Marais’ evening scene varies by street, particularly around rue des Archives and Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie. Match your bedroom to the evening you want instead of choosing by arrondissement alone. If contemporary art is central to your plans, the Centre Pompidou’s main building is closed for renovation; reopening is planned for 2030, with exhibitions continuing at other venues.

3. Saint-Germain and the Latin Quarter

Choose this part of the Left Bank for historic cafés, bookshops and time in the Luxembourg Gardens. Around Odéon and Saint-Germain, restaurants and bars keep evenings busy. The Latin Quarter extends east towards the Panthéon and the sloping streets of the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève.

At Grand Hôtel de l’Univers, the photographed Standard double is 15 m² with a 150 × 200 cm bed; the smaller, rear-facing Classic is 12 m² with a 140 × 190 cm bed. Both have air conditioning. The hotel lists a lift but says it is not accessible to guests with reduced mobility.

At Grandes Écoles, rooms have air conditioning and no television. The Classic room listing includes lift access, while the property’s accommodation occupies different buildings. Confirm the route to the exact room, especially a family category, before relying on that lift listing.

  • Familia Hotel — single and triple categories, with painted Paris murals on rue des Écoles.
  • Hôtel d'Aubusson — a 20-metre indoor pool and Café Laurent’s jazz evenings near rue Dauphine.

The Luxembourg Gardens make a useful break between sightseeing days, but neither selected hotel stands at the garden gate. For a direct CDG arrival, compare the final walk from Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame or Luxembourg with the address; the eastern Latin Quarter can involve a hill. Boulevard Saint-Michel and Boulevard Saint-Germain also carry through traffic, so room orientation matters.

4. The Eiffel Tower and the 7th

Choose this base when time around the Eiffel Tower, Champ de Mars and Invalides is a priority. Rue Cler is useful for food shopping and café stops. Check the address carefully: the 7th stretches well beyond the Tower, and a hotel name or rooftop photograph does not tell you what the bedroom overlooks.

At Cler Hotel, doubles and twins are 14 m², triples 16 m²; connecting rooms for four need advance confirmation. It has air conditioning and a glass lift, but is not wheelchair accessible. The hotel also sells a separate 14 m² attic Eiffel Tower-view category. The selected photograph shows an ordinary double room.

At La Bourdonnais, compare the categories by party:

  • For two: Classic Eiffel Tower, 15–17 m², or Executive Eiffel Tower, 18–23 m², for the named outlook. The photograph shows an Executive Eiffel Tower interior, with the view outside the frame.
  • For four: Junior Suite.
  • With an infant: cots are unavailable in Single and Classic rooms.

Air conditioning and a lift are listed.

If most evenings will be in the Marais or Oberkampf, include the trip home in your decision. École Militaire on line 8 is useful for these two hotels. Compare the bedroom’s outlook and the route from the station when choosing between them.

5. Montmartre

Choose Montmartre for steep lanes, terrace stops and the panorama from Sacré-Cœur. Decide which part of the hill you want: western Montmartre around rue Lepic, the Abbesses streets, and the southern approaches near Anvers produce different walks home. Pigalle adds a separate late-night scene along the southern edge.

At Terrass Hotel, the photographed Privilege Room – Eiffel Tower View & Balcony is a specific category, 25–30 m², with published occupancy of three people or two adults and two children. A Classic room takes two. The hotel has air conditioning and two lifts; for an adapted option, ask about Artist’s Studio room 306. Its shared rooftop bar and the photographed private balcony are separate spaces.

Adagio Montmartre, on place Charles Dullin, is a kitchen option towards the southern foot of the hill. The one-bedroom apartment is 35 m² and takes four; smaller studios take two or three. The residence has a lift, but no adapted apartments and no air conditioning. Apartment layouts vary, so check the booked unit’s sleeping arrangement.

Plan the final approach with luggage. The funicular runs beside Square Louise Michel up towards Sacré-Cœur; it does not remove slopes or stairs between a station and your hotel. A €2.55 Metro–Train–RER ticket covers one ascent or descent, with no Metro or RER connection included in that ride. Eligible Navigo passes also cover it. For a step-free stay, confirm the complete station-to-room route before choosing this area.

6. Canal Saint-Martin, République and Bastille

Choose the east for restaurants, bars and a stay shaped around evenings out. This is a group of separate bases: Canal Saint-Martin runs north of République; Oberkampf is east of the square; Bastille and Gare de Lyon are farther south. A convenient arrival at one end does not place you beside a hotel at the other.

At Hôtel Fabric, the photographed Club rooms are 18 m² for one or two, on the ground floor facing the courtyard. The hotel lists a lift and individual air conditioning. Its four-person Top Floor category is a 28 m² duplex, so consider the internal level change. Oberkampf and Saint-Ambroise are useful nearby stations.

At Le Citizen, the photographed La Junior gives two guests 30 m²; an adapted version is offered subject to availability. Air conditioning and a lift are listed. La Grande accommodates two adults and two children, while La Familiale has no kitchen. The described rooms face the canal, so decide whether that outlook suits you alongside the activity on the quays.

2 more stays

Rue Oberkampf, rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud and the canal’s café terraces are reasons to choose the area. For sleep, discuss the actual room position and glazing with the hotel. Choose the Gare de Lyon end if a mainline train is the priority; choose the canal or Oberkampf when those are where you plan to spend your evenings.

7. Grenelle and the 15th

Choose Grenelle for apartment layouts, food shopping and a neighbourhood base near the Seine. The two selected addresses serve different needs: Boulevard de Grenelle for Metro connections, and rue du Théâtre for the Beaugrenelle side. Parc André-Citroën lies farther southwest; it is a separate outing from either hotel.

Bleu de Grenelle stands beside La Motte-Picquet–Grenelle, served by lines 6, 8 and 10. Its Executive Eiffel Tower Double Room Large is a named view category, 16–18 m² for two. Air conditioning is listed. The hotel says its two lifts are not wheelchair friendly, so arrange an adapted room and its access route directly. The elevated Metro runs along the boulevard; check the bedroom’s orientation if noise matters.

Adagio Paris Centre Tour Eiffel offers one-bedroom apartments for four, using a double sofa bed, and a six-person apartment with two bedrooms, a double sofa bed in the living room and two bathrooms. Both provide a kitchen; air conditioning, lifts and adapted units are listed. If you want a Tower view, select a category that expressly includes it.

Arriving from the airports

From Charles de Gaulle (CDG), start with RER B. It serves Gare du Nord, Châtelet–Les Halles, Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame, Luxembourg and Denfert-Rochereau.

From Orly, start with Metro 14. The train takes about 25 minutes to Châtelet; add terminal access, waiting and the onward journey. Orlyval to Antony, then RER B, can suit a Luxembourg-side address. The €14 airport ticket covers CDG’s RER B and either Orly route; Navigo Week excludes Orlyval.9

CDG terminal access and discontinued airport buses

At CDG, Terminal 1 connects to the CDG 1 railway station by free CDGVAL; Terminal 3 involves a walk. Terminal 2 uses CDG 2 TGV, with further terminal walks or a shuttle for 2G. RoissyBus stopped from 1 March 2026; OrlyBus stopped from 3 March 2025.

Beauvais needs a separate coach journey

The official A01 coach goes to Porte Maillot, advertised from 1 hour 15 minutes, traffic permitting. A04 goes to La Villette, from 1 hour 30 minutes, and requires an online reservation for a chosen date and time. These times end at the Paris coach stop.

Beauvais coach fares and the onward Metro

On either route, online fares are €17.90 single / €29.90 return for ages 12+, and €9.90 / €19.90 for ages 4–11; children aged 0–3 travel free. A01 tickets bought on site cost €18 / €35, including for ages 4–11. The coach and the onward Metro are separate purchases; Navigo and Paris Visite do not include this coach.

From Porte Maillot, M1 serves the Louvre, southern Marais, Bastille and Gare de Lyon; change at Charles de Gaulle–Étoile for M2 towards Montmartre or M6 towards Grenelle. From La Villette, use M7 at Porte de la Villette for Opéra, Palais Royal or Pont Marie; Gare de l’Est connects to M5 for the canal and Oberkampf. Match the last Metro and hotel check-in to a late flight.

Taxi or a cheaper surface connection?

Licensed Paris taxis have these 2026 flat fares per vehicle for direct trips between each airport and an address within Paris, in either direction:

AirportRight BankLeft Bank
CDG€56€65
Orly€45€36

Use the official taxi rank.

Taxi supplements and cheaper surface routes

Booking supplements are €4 for an immediate reservation or €7 in advance; each passenger from the fifth adds €5.50. These flats do not cover Beauvais, arbitrary suburban destinations or private-hire quotations.10

For a lower fare with more time and transfers, CDG’s 9517 bus to Saint-Denis Pleyel plus M14, or Orly’s T7 tram to Villejuif–Louis Aragon plus M7, uses a €2.05 Bus–Tram ticket plus a €2.55 rail ticket: €4.60 per adult, before any card cost.

Which transport ticket?

The following are 2026 prices in euros, per traveller. Children aged 4–9 qualify for the reduced singles below; under-fours travel free on the ordinary network, and ages 10+ pay the adult visitor fare. Beauvais uses the different age bands above.

TicketAdultAge 4–9What it covers
Metro–Train–RER€2.55€1.30One continuous rail journey, with permitted rail transfers within two hours; airport rail excluded.
Bus–Tram€2.05€1.05Permitted surface connections within 90 minutes; no return or interrupted journey on the same line.
Paris Région <> Aéroports€14€7One continuous journey on CDG RER B, Orly M14 or Orlyval, with permitted rail connections within two hours.

Time limits run from first validation; rail transfers normally stay inside the paid network. Rail singles do not include a bus or tram connection.

A Navigo Easy card costs €2 before tickets, and each fare-paying traveller needs their own card or compatible phone. Ordinary Metro–Train–RER singles and airport singles cannot coexist on the same card or phone: use separate cards or phones, or finish the ordinary singles at least two hours before loading the airport ticket.11

Navigo Week, all zones 1–5, costs €32.40 for Monday–Sunday, with no child discount. Buy that week’s pass by Thursday. It includes CDG on RER B and Orly on M14, but excludes Orlyval and the Beauvais coach. Load it on a compatible phone or personal Navigo card, not Navigo Easy. A visitor’s Navigo Découverte costs €5 extra and needs a name and photo.

A midweek arrival can still work: two €14 airport journeys plus two separate €2.55 city journeys total €33.10, compared with €32.40 on an existing compatible card or phone, if everything falls in the same week. Buying a new Découverte adds €5 to the pass cost.

Navigo Day costs €12.30 for one chosen service day, with no child discount; airport rail and Orlyval are excluded. Paris Visite includes airport rail and Orlyval and uses consecutive calendar days:

Paris Visite: fares by duration
DurationAdultAge 4–9
1 day€30.60€15.30
2 days€45.40€22.70
3 days€63.80€31.90
5 days€78€39

Compare your journeys, the week boundary and any card cost before choosing.12

Paris tourist tax in 2026

For nights from 1 January 2026, these Paris rates apply per non-exempt adult, per night, year-round. Use the accommodation’s official classification. Children under 18 are exempt.

ClassificationTotal per adult/night
Palace€15.93
5-star hotel, residence or classified furnished accommodation€11.70
4-star€8.45
3-star€5.53
2-star€3.25
1-star; guesthouses; collective hostels€2.60

These totals already include the departmental and regional additions of 10%, 15% and 200% of the municipal base. Two adults staying four nights pay €67.60 in a 4-star or €44.24 in a 3-star.

For unclassified accommodation or accommodation awaiting classification, the calculation starts at 5% of the nightly price excluding VAT, per person, then adds the same supplements, capped at €15.93 per taxable adult/night. Divide the room price by all guests, including children, before charging the non-exempt adults. Check the reservation’s total and payment terms: the host or platform may collect the tax.10

Choose one base for a short stay

For three or four nights, choose around your repeated journeys and evening plans, then keep that address for the stay. An island setting, kitchen or hilltop view can justify its particular journey; moving hotels costs packing, luggage and check-in time.

Settle the bed plan, bedroom outlook and complete street-to-room access before comparing the final total and cancellation terms. For summer, the Adagio residences differ materially: Montmartre has no air conditioning; Paris Centre Tour Eiffel lists it. In colder or wetter weather, weigh the final walk, useful station and nearby dinner options.

Questions that help make the final choice

Should a first-time visitor stay beside the Eiffel Tower?

Choose the 7th or Grenelle if the Tower and the western Left Bank are central to your plans. For a more mixed historic-centre itinerary, start with the Louvre or Marais addresses. A Tower view belongs to a particular room category and can be worthwhile if you will spend time enjoying it.

Which choice works best with children?

Start with the bed plan. Citadines Opéra combines a central location with a four-person apartment; Adagio Paris Centre Tour Eiffel offers four- and six-person layouts. A family room without a kitchen, such as Le Citizen’s La Familiale, solves a different need. Count sofa beds, cot restrictions and the final walk with a pushchair before comparing totals.

What if Disneyland is part of the trip?

For a city stay with a park day, a useful RER A connection—such as Auber, Châtelet–Les Halles or Gare de Lyon—helps reach Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy. If most days will be at the parks, compare staying near them with making that journey repeatedly. The seven areas in this guide are Paris city bases.

Can a private apartment be a good alternative?

It can suit a stay where cooking and separate rooms matter. In Paris, tourist-rental advertisements must show the required registration number; a principal residence is limited to 90 rental days per calendar year. Other premises can require additional authorisation, so a number alone does not establish every permission. Check the exact address, access and cancellation terms. Hotel-style serviced residences follow their own accommodation category.

Where should I stay for an early train?

Choose around the station your ticket actually uses. The Bastille/Gare de Lyon alternatives here serve that station; canal-side hotels suit a different part of eastern Paris. For Gare du Nord or Gare de l’Est departures, compare the early-morning connection and final station entrance before prioritising nightlife or a view.
