Best Area to Stay in Budapest: Choose Between Pest, Buda and the Island

For a first Budapest visit, start with Belváros or the lower end of Andrássy Avenue in Pest. Choose the Jewish Quarter for late evenings, Castle Hill for its setting, or Margaret Island for a stay centred on the hotel spa.

Find your Budapest base

The Danube separates hilly Buda from flatter Pest. The distinction within Buda matters too: a hotel beside Matthias Church is up on Castle Hill, while Fő utca in Víziváros lies below it. Margaret Island is a separate base between the banks.

The Danube divides Buda on the west (left) from Pest on the east (right). Castle Hill rises above lower Víziváros; Margaret Island is a separate base between the banks. Choose a closer view for overlapping areas, or a place from the menus. Move the map with two fingers.

Read the address before judging a district name. The sections below focus on useful parts of larger districts; a search result elsewhere in the same district can give you a different journey home.

1. Belváros–Lipótváros: central Pest for a first visit

Choose District V if you want the Danube promenade, Parliament and St Stephen’s Basilica woven into ordinary walks from your hotel. The southern end, around Ferenciek tere and Váci utca, works well for the market and river crossings; northern Lipótváros brings you closer to Parliament.

At Danubius Hotel Astoria, the renovated Superior rooms face the street, while the Classic categories have a different style. The operator describes the hotel as only partially accessible, so confirm the route to your particular room if steps are a concern.

For a riverfront hotel, check whether your window faces the tram line or a busy bridge approach. Elsewhere in V, restaurant terraces and road traffic can matter more than the district’s formal reputation.

2. Terézváros and Andrássy: the Opera and easy evenings

The lower part of Andrássy Avenue puts you between the Opera, the Basilica and the restaurants around Liszt Ferenc tér. Stay near this end for a short city break; an address farther up the avenue changes the walking distance to the river, even though it is still “Andrássy”.

At Casati, on Paulay Ede utca behind the avenue, the official website welcomes guests from age 14, while Booking labels the property “Adults Only” and lists no children. Confirm a teenager’s acceptance before paying for that booking.

Around Oktogon, Teréz körút and restaurant squares, ask about the actual window orientation and air conditioning. A room facing an internal courtyard may still overlook a bar, a breakfast terrace or equipment.

3. Erzsébetváros and the Jewish Quarter: walk home from the bars

Inner District VII suits a trip with dinners, ruin bars and late walks around Kazinczy utca and Gozsdu. The Dohány Street Synagogue and the smaller streets around Rumbach give daytime walks a different focus. Choose this base when the evening location is part of the appeal.

Under-14s need parental supervision in the pools and cannot use the saunas; children in nappies cannot use the pools, including in swim nappies.2

4. Palotanegyed: central apartments and the museum quarter

The Palace Quarter occupies the inner part of District VIII, around the Hungarian National Museum and streets such as Bródy Sándor utca and Szentkirályi utca. It suits a longer stay with a kitchen, or a city break where a little distance from the Jewish Quarter’s bar cluster is welcome.

5. Inner Ferencváros and Ráday: restaurants near Kálvin tér

For this base, concentrate on Ráday utca and the streets between Kálvin tér and the inner part of District IX. You can head out for dinner along Ráday, walk towards the Great Market Hall, and reach M3 or M4 without crossing the river first.

Similarly, “Corvin” can describe addresses on different sides of Üllői út; check the street and district rather than the marketing name.

6. Buda: choose Castle Hill or lower Víziváros

Stay on Castle Hill for mornings around Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. Choose lower Víziváros if you would rather begin near the river and use Batthyány tér’s M2 connection to Pest. These two addresses can look close on a flat map while feeling quite different with luggage.

7. Újlipótváros and Margaret Island: apartments or a spa retreat

Újlipótváros, on the Pest bank in District XIII, has residential streets, cafés along Pozsonyi út and access towards Nyugati and Lehel tér. Margaret Island is a separate place to stay, surrounded by parkland and water. Pick the mainland for neighbourhood life; pick the island when time at the hotel spa is a priority.

At Adina, studios have kitchenettes, while one- and two-bedroom apartments add full kitchens, living areas and washing machines. Hotel guests normally have included access to the indoor swimming pool and wellness facilities. The pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym are closed from 16 to 22 November 2026 for maintenance. For a trip with small children, confirm their permitted use of the individual wellness facilities.

At Ensana Thermal Margaret Island, thermal bathing, recreational bathing and ordinary swimming have separate rules: the thermal pool is for ages 14+, and the recreational pool for ages 6+. Under-14s need an accompanying adult. The named Stay with Spa, Bed and Breakfast package includes spa, sauna and fitness access; check the inclusions of the rate you select. The outdoor pool is seasonal, with its stated 2026 season ending on 13 September.

Adina and Ensana are on different sides of the island’s channel. Ensana is towards the island’s northern end, so allow for the journey to central Pest and plan the return after dinner. From Nyugati or Margaret Bridge, allow for a further bus or taxi ride, or a longer walk, to the northern-island hotels. Car access to Ensana is via Árpád Bridge.

From Budapest Airport to your hotel

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) has two useful public-transport routes. The best one depends on the last part of the journey to your address.3

RouteFare per adult, one wayWhere it helps
100E Airport Express2,500 HUF for the airport busDirect to Kálvin tér, Astoria and Deák Ferenc tér; runs around the clock. Allow roughly 40 minutes to central Pest, depending on traffic.
200E + M3850 HUF with a 90-minute mobile ticket; 1,000 HUF with two ordinary singlesChange at Kőbánya-Kispest while M3 is running. Useful for hotels near the blue metro line; a valid ordinary travelcard also covers this route.

For Ráday and the southern Palace Quarter, Kálvin tér is the useful 100E stop. For Astoria and northern Palotanegyed, consider Astoria; for lower Andrássy and inner District VII, Deák is a useful arrival point. For Víziváros, continue towards Batthyány tér on M2. A Castle Hill or island hotel still needs its own final connection.

200E–M3 transfers: the 90-minute ticket is mobile only and requires an active internet connection. Validate it on boarding 200E and again when entering the metro. Your last transfer must begin within 90 minutes of first validation; the final ride can finish later. With two ordinary 500 HUF singles, validate one on 200E and the other at the M3 entrance: a single ticket does not cover a bus-to-metro transfer.

100E ticket scope: the 2,500 HUF ticket covers the airport bus only; an onward metro, bus or tram journey needs its own valid ticket or pass. Ordinary singles, time-based tickets and 24/72-hour travelcards do not cover 100E. A 1,000 HUF airport add-on is available in BudapestGO with an eligible monthly-or-longer Budapest-pass, Pest County Pass or Hungary Pass.

Concessions: passengers aged 65 or over, of any nationality, can use 100E free with proof of age, such as a passport, identity card or card-format driving licence. Under-14s with a Hungarian student ID also qualify; visiting children do not all qualify for that student entitlement.

Returning or arriving at night: Deák and Kálvin are the usual all-day 100E boarding points. Airportbound boarding at Astoria is only at night. After M3 stops, 100E remains the direct central route; 200E also runs overnight, but its onward connection must be planned for your arrival time in BudapestGO.

For a door-to-door arrival, Budapest Airport names both Főtaxi and Uber as contracted partners. Use the official rank or the designated app pickup, and plan the actual hotel entrance for a hilltop or island address.

Getting around from your base

A 24-hour Budapest-travelcard costs 2,750 HUF per person, and a 72-hour card costs 5,750 HUF. They cover unlimited ordinary journeys for the consecutive period shown on the ticket, including 200E and M3, and exclude 100E. Tram 6 runs all night; check the current route home in BudapestGO rather than assuming all trams on the ring boulevard do.

Choose a bath before choosing a spa hotel

Széchenyi is in City Park, convenient from Andrássy on M1. Rudas is on the Buda riverbank below Gellért Hill; Lukács is farther north on the Buda side. Gellért is closed, with reopening planned for 2028.4

Ordinary visitor admission at Széchenyi, Rudas and Lukács is 14+.

Rudas sessions and night-ticket conditions

At Rudas, the Turkish section is women-only on Tuesdays and men-only on Wednesdays; mixed access starts at 11:00 on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and runs throughout the weekend opening period. Public holidays can change the pattern. Its Friday and Saturday night sessions, 22:00–03:00, require a separate online ticket.

Lukács · daily7,000 HUF8,000 HUF8,000 HUF

¹ Daily admission per person; Lukács prices are for adults. Peak dates follow each operator’s calendar.

Extra services and current bath restrictions

At Széchenyi, a cabin is 1,000 HUF extra. Rudas night bathing is 15,000 HUF per person, separate from the daytime ticket; its Turkish-section access rules still matter when choosing a daytime visit. Rudas currently states that the bath is not accessible to people with disabilities. Check the operator’s available-services page for the particular facilities you want. Lukács currently lists its wellness-area Finnish sauna and private-bath service as unavailable during refurbishment.

An ordinary hotel pool is useful after sightseeing; a thermal hotel can organise much of the stay around bathing. Choose Ensana for the latter pattern, and compare the more central hotels if you mainly want one visit to a public bath.

Forints and the hotel tax line

The local currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF). All official fares above are quoted in forints; a hotel’s displayed currency and the conversion applied at payment can differ. Compare the final total in the currency you will actually be charged.

At card terminals and ATMs, choosing HUF avoids the provider’s offered home-currency conversion (DCC), though your card’s own conversion and withdrawal fees may still apply. Check menus and bills for a listed service charge, szervizdíj or felszolgálási díj, before adding a tip; any extra tip is optional.

Tourist tax, IFA, is 4% of the taxable accommodation charge in the districts covered here. That base excludes VAT, compulsory breakfast and other services. Guests under 18 are exempt. Margaret Island uses the capital’s separate regime, which also exempts guests aged 70 and above; that additional exemption does not automatically apply to a mainland District XIII hotel.5

For illustration, 40,000 HUF of taxable accommodation for one night, with all guests taxable, gives 1,600 HUF of IFA. Check the tax breakdown before adding it to a quote. Ensana’s own FAQ says its published prices include VAT and local city tax, so an automatic “add 4% at checkout” would be misleading.

Booking an apartment in 2026

District VI’s zero-day rule, effective since 1 January 2026, covers the legally defined private and other accommodation categories. A licensed hotel belongs to a different category; “aparthotel” in a listing title does not establish its registration type.

District VII has a different rule: those rental categories need a qualifying condominium agreement. Properties registered by the end of 2025 have until 31 December 2026 to obtain and submit it. Separately, a Budapest-wide pause on new registrations in those categories runs through the end of 2026, with transitional exceptions. For an apartment booking, ask the operator to confirm the registration category and permission for your travel dates.6

For an event trip, match the hotel to the venue and the route home.

Questions that finish the choice

Is Buda or Pest better for a first visit?

Pest is usually the easier starting point for a short stay with frequent restaurant stops and airport-bus access. Castle Hill is a deliberate choice for its setting. Lower Víziváros offers a Buda address with a different journey to Pest, so compare it separately from the hilltop.

Which base works for a family needing more space?

Compare Silver Crown’s separate-bedroom apartments in Palotanegyed with Adina’s one- and two-bedroom apartments in Újlipótváros. The former is closer to central Pest sightseeing; the latter gives you a residential setting and a hotel swimming pool when open. Check the specific room’s bed setup and occupancy before booking.

Where should I look if sleeping well matters most?

Start with a room away from the activity you plan to avoid: bar courtyards, traffic junctions, tram-facing windows or hotel terraces. Palotanegyed, lower Víziváros and residential Újlipótváros give you alternatives to the inner Jewish Quarter, but ask the property about the actual available room.

Should I stay on Margaret Island for a two-night city break?

Choose it if you expect to spend a substantial part of each day at the spa or in the park. If most of your plans are restaurants, museums and late evenings in Pest, the extra journey can take a noticeable share of a short trip.

Do I need a car?

For the bases in this guide, walking and public transport usually cover the city stay. If you arrive by car, confirm the hotel’s parking and access instructions, especially for Castle Hill and the island, before following a map pin.
