Key places

1. Naxos Town (Chora)

Chora puts the ferry port, restaurants and the Kastro lanes close together. The waterfront and port are lively in summer; the upper lanes around the Kastro and Bourgos feel quieter. Pick this base if you want a proper town around you and can take a bus or taxi to the beach. The Portara, the unfinished marble gateway on the harbour islet, is a short walk from the centre.

2. Agios Georgios

Choose this bay for beach days with restaurants and shops close by. The municipal beach guide describes fine sand and shallow water suitable for young children, with windsurfing concentrated at the southern edge. It is an easy family base near town.

3. Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna

This is the easiest stretch for beach services, waterside tavernas and a regular summer bus connection to Chora. Agios Prokopios has a long serviced beach; Agia Anna adds a pier and a more village-like feel. The two beaches connect along the sand. Expect the greatest crowds around peak summer, especially near the most developed sections.

At Liana, choose the category for your group:

  • Four guests: Executive Suite with Pool View has two rooms separated by a door, a queen bed and two sofa beds.
  • The pictured room: Superior Room with Sea View is a separate category for up to three.

Other categories include semi-basement and annex rooms; views and hot tubs depend on the category.

This search focuses on Agios Prokopios, the northern part of the combined beach corridor.

Also compare Stelida for a hotel-led stay above the beach. Its hillside suites and villas offer a different routine from staying beside the sand: time on your veranda, with a separate walk or transfer to the beach and village services. Choose Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna instead when having tavernas and the main beach corridor immediately around you matters most.

4. Plaka

Plaka’s long sandy shore gives you more room to spread out than the organised beach strip. Its wilder sections have fewer services and can offer quieter evenings, though the exact address matters. Bring shade and water where the beach is unserviced. The bus reaches the main corridor, but a car or scooter makes it easier to move between the dunes, tavernas and the southern end.

5. Mikri Vigla and the south

At Mikri Vigla, a headland separates two different beach days. The northern kite bay is known for windsurfing and kitesurfing; the southern Sahara side offers more sheltered swimming. The municipal beach guide describes the rocky divide. Choose the side before you book, especially if you want a calm family swim rather than a wind-sport base.

Thalassa Naxos

For swimming farther south: Thalassa Naxos is at Paralia Kastraki, about 50 metres from the Sahara beach stretch and 2 km from the Mikri Vigla wind-sport area according to the property. Its 32 m² Superior Suite Sea View with Private Terrace has two separate rooms, a double bed and two singles for up to four; a fifth is on request.

This is a quieter Kastraki base by the southern swimming shore, rather than the north-facing kite bay. Check the last KTEL return and the walk from the stop; a vehicle gives more flexibility for Alyko, Pyrgaki and several inland stops.

Visit the interior as a day trip

Halki, Filoti and Apiranthos make a rewarding day trip for Naxian food, mountain scenery and marble architecture. An inland stay suits travellers who want village evenings and are happy to plan beach trips by car. For a first visit centred on swimming and easy dinners, the coastal bases above are simpler. Village bus timetables change by season; check the current KTEL return service before relying on it.

Getting around and choosing the season

For three to five nights, I would keep one base: Chora or Agios Georgios for mixed town-and-beach days, or the west-coast beach corridor for a swimming-led trip. With a week, add an inland village day and a southern-coast outing before deciding whether a second accommodation move adds enough to your holiday.

Choose the ferry departure port

The ferry port is in Chora. From central Athens, start by comparing Piraeus departures with Blue Star and Seajets . From Athens Airport or east Attica, also compare Rafina when an operator actually serves Naxos on your travel date. Athens Airport lists Metro Line 3/X96 connections to Piraeus and a regional KTEL link to Rafina. Compare the transfer plus crossing, arrival time and seat/vehicle conditions. Rafina–Naxos sailings are seasonal ; check the operator’s current route calendar before choosing Rafina.

Naxos Airport (JNX) serves domestic arrivals. Check your flight and onward connection together: the current KTEL timetable labels its airport stop “AIRPORT (300 meters)”, so do not plan on a bus at the terminal door without confirming the boarding point.

Bus fares and buying tickets

The operator currently lists adult tickets at €1.80 for Prokopios or Agia Anna, €2.00 for Plaka, €2.60 for Mikri Vigla and €2.30 for Halki per adult ticket.

Prokopios buses depart from the Naxos Town port terminal . Buy tickets before boarding at the port bus office or an authorised seller; KTEL’s ticket information says they are not sold onboard.

Stops and the last return

Use the operator’s dated timetable for your travel dates. Check the nearest stop, the final walk to your hotel and the last return before relying on a bus for south-coast or village trips.

When a car helps

You can manage without a car in Chora, Agios Georgios and the main west-coast bus corridor. A car adds flexibility for Mikri Vigla, Kastraki, Alyko, Pyrgaki or several inland stops; reserve early in peak summer. A vehicle is useful rather than essential in Plaka, depending on where your accommodation sits.

Beach hotels and services are seasonal. July and August bring the busiest beaches; June and September are worth comparing for a less busy beach stay, while many beach properties close later in autumn. Confirm the hotel and services operate during your visit.

Climate resilience fee

The official AADE rule A.1202 , its published government-gazette PDF and the 2026 English FAQ give these rates:

Legal accommodation categoryApril–OctoberNovember–March
Hotels, 1–2 stars€2€0.50
Hotels, 3 stars€5€1.50
Hotels, 4 stars€10€3
Hotels, 5 stars€15€4
Licensed furnished rented rooms/apartments€2€0.50

The charge is per daily use of each room/apartment, not per guest. The guest pays it after the stay and before departure, with a separate receipt; a stay crossing different-season months is itemised by month. These rates have applied since 1 January 2025 and remain linked from the current AADE service page ; the 2026 FAQ explains collection and receipts. Ask which legal category applies to your property and whether the displayed total includes the charge: a kitchenette or Booking quality rating does not establish that classification. Short-term rentals and tourist villas have other statutory categories, so do not apply the furnished-room row to every apartment.

FAQ

Where is best to stay in Naxos for a first visit?
Choose Chora for port access, restaurants and the Kastro; choose Agios Georgios if having a shallow beach nearby matters more. Both work well without a car.
Is Chora or Agios Prokopios better for a stay?
Chora is a town base with evening life and the ferry port. Agios Prokopios is a beach base with organised sand and summer services; you will use the bus or a vehicle to visit town.
Which Naxos beach is best for families and least windy?
Agios Georgios is the easiest town beach for shallow-water access. At Mikri Vigla, the southern Sahara side is more sheltered than the north-facing kitesurfing bay, though wind and sea conditions change by day.
Do you need a car in Naxos?
No for Chora, Agios Georgios and most of the main west-coast corridor. A car is useful for the southern coves, remote accommodation and flexible village visits.
When should I book a beach hotel?
Book early for July and August, when demand is highest and some popular properties sell out. Check whether a hotel is open before planning a late-autumn or winter stay.
How can I plan a Naxos stay without hiring a car?
Compare Kalergis Studios by Agios Georgios for cooking facilities and walks to the beach and town, then use KTEL for selected outings. Buy tickets before boarding and check the return timetable; fares and stops are below .
What is the climate resilience fee?
It is charged per daily use of a room or apartment, rather than per guest, with a separate receipt. The fee table gives the seasonal rates. Confirm the property’s legal classification; a kitchenette or Booking quality rating does not determine the category.
