Best area to stay in Tenerife: choose your base
For a first beach holiday, start with Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos. Choose Puerto de la Cruz for gardens and northern outings, or La Laguna for historic streets. El Médano suits a trip built around wind sports.

Find your base on the island
The south-west resort strip runs from Costa Adeje through Playa de las Américas to Los Cristianos. El Médano lies farther east, Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast, and the separate cities of Santa Cruz and La Laguna in the north-east. TFS means Tenerife South Airport; TFN means Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport.
OpenFreeMap is unavailable. You can explicitly load an OpenStreetMap fallback.

Airports, beaches, sights & hotels
1. Costa Adeje: choose your stretch of coast
Costa Adeje covers several different holiday settings. Around Fañabé and El Duque, beach promenades, restaurants and large resorts make a stay without a car practical. An address farther inland can mean a climb home; the name alone tells you little about the walk.
La Caleta, at the western end, has waterfront restaurants and rocky bathing spots. Choose it for time around the hotel and village. For a sandy beach, check the route to El Duque from the actual property.

2. Playa de las Américas: nightlife or the southern seafront
Choose the Las Verónicas end for clubs and late evenings, or the southern seafront around El Camisón for a stay built around beach walks. In either case, the room’s position relative to the venues matters more than the resort label.
The Golden Mile is the shopping and restaurant strip along Avenida de las Américas: a useful landmark if you want shops and dinners on the way back from the beach.

At Europe Villa Cortés, the pictured Double Standard does not promise an ocean outlook; choose a named sea-view category for that.

3. Los Cristianos: the promenade, ferry port and hills
Los Cristianos works well for beach walks, meals in town and a ferry trip to La Gomera. The promenade connects the town beach with Las Vistas. The accommodation map also climbs inland: a Los Cristianos address can be well above the port.

Its main pool is heated in winter, while the natural pool and FunAttic rooftop pool are adults-only. The Premium Lounge category sleeps up to four; the Classic room is for two. Enter the children’s ages when checking capacity and booking terms.

For La Gomera, allow time to reach the pier and board. Fred. Olsen publishes about 50 minutes on the ferry to San Sebastián; its terminal guidance puts the main Los Cristianos bus stop about 15 minutes’ walk from the pier, with foot-passenger boarding normally closing 20 minutes before sailing. An uphill hotel adds its own journey before that. Garajonay requires onward travel after arrival.1

4. El Médano: a town for wind sports
El Médano’s square, cafés and beach give it a compact town centre. Windsurfers and kitesurfers have a reason to choose this coast deliberately; travellers wanting long, sheltered pool afternoons should weigh the wind more carefully. Conditions vary by day and by stretch of beach.

Tenerife South Airport (TFS) is nearby on the map, but the bus journey still involves a connection at San Isidro. A direct taxi may be simpler with bulky equipment. Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport (TFN) is farther away; the flight schedule and total onward journey should decide which airport you use.

5. Puerto de la Cruz: promenade or gardens above town
Puerto de la Cruz combines an older town centre, the Martiánez waterfront and gardens in the higher La Paz district. It is a useful base for La Orotava and northern outings. The practical hotel choice is often the evening walk: stay low for the promenade, or accept an uphill return for more garden space.

6. Santa Cruz: a city stay with parks and a waterfront
Santa Cruz suits days around museums, shopping, García Sanabria Park and the waterfront by the Auditorio. Las Teresitas is a separate beach outing near San Andrés, rather than a city-centre hotel beach. The bus interchange is useful for exploring without a car.

For 2027 Carnival, the published street celebrations run 19–28 February. Stay in Santa Cruz if joining them is the purpose of the trip; check the address against the programme and venue locations if you want quieter nights. La Laguna is a separate base reached by tram, with its own evening journey home.
Browse Santa Cruz stays
7. La Laguna: historic streets and a base towards Anaga
San Cristóbal de La Laguna has a compact UNESCO-listed historic centre of courtyards, churches and pedestrian streets. Its higher setting is cooler than Santa Cruz, which matters when packing for evenings. Choose it for time in the city and outings towards Anaga, rather than for a beach outside the hotel.
Lobby loungeLa Laguna Gran Hotel
Historic lounge and central streets, with a seasonal rooftop pool.View on BookingLa Laguna Gran Hotel has rooms in both the historic house and a newer annex. The shared historic lounge does not mean every bedroom is in the original building. Its rooftop pool is seasonal.
Tram Line 1 runs between Trinidad in La Laguna and Santa Cruz’s Intercambiador, taking approximately 35 minutes in the tram end to end. Add the walk to the stop and waiting time. For TFN, use the airport bus rather than looking for an airport tram stop.
Browse La Laguna stays
Also consider the west: Los Gigantes and Puerto de Santiago
Choose this coast if cliff views, a boat outing and evenings around the waterfront appeal more than the long southern resort strip. Los Gigantes puts the cliffs and marina at the heart of the stay; Puerto de Santiago adds a small black-sand bay, dockside promenade and restaurants.
Use the beach to narrow the address: Los Guíos is beneath the cliffs by Los Gigantes, while Puerto Santiago beach is the smaller dockside bay. The viewpoint at Archipenque gives another perspective from above. A hotel up the slope offers a different daily walk from one near the waterfront; compare that return route before choosing a room for its view.
This western stay suits a week with several days around the coast and Teno. For repeated Anaga and La Laguna outings, compare a northern base or a split stay instead.
Arriving: airport, base, then your hotel
Compare flights and onward transport together. TFS is convenient for the southern resorts; TFN is convenient for the north and the two cities. A suitable flight to the other airport can still work, especially when it connects with the cross-island bus.
Airport buses, last departures and fares
| Arrival and base | Public transport to the area | The last leg |
|---|---|---|
| TFS → Costa Adeje, Américas or Los Cristianos | 40 to Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje by day; 711 covers night journeys. Line 40’s published full-route time is about 40 minutes. | For Américas, check the walk or local bus from the arrival stop to the actual address. La Caleta and uphill hotels can need another bus or taxi. |
| TFS → El Médano | 10 to San Isidro, then 408. | Allow for the connection and the walk from the town stop. |
| TFN → La Laguna or Santa Cruz | 20 to the relevant interchange. | Continue on foot, by local transport or taxi to the actual address. Late stopping journeys take longer than the standard express. |
| TFN → Puerto de la Cruz | 30, including the La Paz/Botánico corridor. The published full-route time is about 30 minutes. | Choose the stop for lower town or La Paz; do not add an unnecessary climb from the bus station. |
| TFS → Puerto, or TFN → the southern resorts | 343, with four departures per direction daily. | Match the timetable to baggage collection; waiting and the hotel connection can outweigh the road journey. |
All bus times here are Tenerife local time. The 40 currently leaves TFS until 21:40; the 711’s southbound airport times begin at 23:00, with gaps during the night, and use the Departures terminal stop. The last 343 from TFS towards Puerto is 21:50 on weekdays, but 19:40 on weekends and public holidays. Check the linked timetable for your travel day.3
If the 343 does not fit, a public-transport alternative from TFS is 10 to Santa Cruz, then 102 to Puerto. From TFN towards Costa Adeje, 20 to Santa Cruz, then 110 is another option. These are connections, with additional waiting, rather than guaranteed through services.
Aena lists indicative one-way fares of €2.65 on the 20 between TFN and Santa Cruz/La Laguna, €4.75 on the 30 to Puerto, and €13.55 between TFS and Puerto on the 343. Confirm the applicable fare with TITSA; these figures are not a ten+ discount quotation.
Getting around: when a car earns its keep
A car is useful for several stops in the Orotava Valley, flexible viewpoints or a day that continues after the last mountain bus. A stay built around a resort promenade, Puerto’s town centre or the Santa Cruz–La Laguna tram corridor can work without one. Check hotel parking before hiring for the whole stay; a few touring days may be enough.
TITSA single bus fares depend on distance and can be paid by cash or bank card.
TITSA’s visitor passes cost €10 for 24 hours from first use or €50 for seven days, for individual use on the published bus-and-tram network. A physical ten+ card adds €2; ten+ Móvil is another medium. Compare the pass with your actual journeys. Resident subsidies are separate products with their own eligibility rules.
For a single tram trip, the published fare is €1.35 on the card/ticket medium or €1.10 through ten+ Móvil. Do not assume a universal discount percentage for other ten+ journeys.
Teide can be a structured day trip by bus. The 342 leaves Costa Adeje at 09:25 and Los Cristianos at 09:40, returning past the cable-car stop at 15:40. The 348 leaves Puerto at 09:30, returning past the cable-car stop at 16:05. Each has one published outward-and-return service daily; choose compatible activity slots and check road and service notices.
For a late arrival or a hotel beyond a useful bus stop, compare an official airport taxi with a prebooked transfer. Check app coverage for the actual pickup location when deciding how to travel.
Teide: cable car, summit and trail reservations
Choose your visit before booking: time in the national park, a cable-car ride, or a separately authorised summit hike.4
- Cable-car ticket
- Base station
- La Rambleta
- PNT 10 authorisation
- La Rambleta
- Summit on foot
Check cable-car operation and trail conditions separately before travel.
An independent return cable-car ticket starts at €42 per non-resident adult, or €21 for children aged 3–13. The operator excludes children under three. Other health and mobility restrictions apply; read the booking conditions before paying. Some guided products explicitly bundle the cable-car ticket and summit permit.
Teide trail fees, booking releases and December rules
For chargeable daytime slots, PNT 10 costs €15 per person resident outside the Canary Islands, or €6 for residents of the other Canary Islands. Tenerife residents and children under 14 are exempt from that charge but still need the appropriate reservation. PNT 07 Montaña Blanca–La Rambleta, the walking ascent, has its own reservation. In its chargeable daytime slots it costs €6 on working days or €10 on weekends/public holidays for non-Canary residents, and €3/€5 for residents of the other islands; Tenerife residents are exempt.
Reservations open up to 56 days ahead, with a new week released on Mondays at 07:00 Canary Islands time. Conditions change for visits from 6 December 2026, including 90-minute summit slots and revised daytime charging windows. Use the rules displayed for your visit date; these trail charges are not a general admission price for the whole national park.4
Allow another possible day for Teide if it is a priority. Wind, snow or ice can interrupt the cable car or close trails independently. A cable-car ticket does not override a trail closure, and hiking routes have their own equipment requirements.
Masca, Anaga and the two parks
Masca gorge is a difficult, roughly five-kilometre descent, not just a village visit. Children under eight are not admitted. The mandatory 355 bus and onward boat need separate planning; disrupted sea access can mean climbing back up.
Masca price, arrival deadlines and boat arrangements
Masca gorge requires a planned excursion, whichever hotel you choose. The current descent ticket starts at €40.66 for a non-resident adult; the mandatory 355 bus from Santiago del Teide, onward boat and return travel from Los Gigantes are extra. Be at Santiago del Teide stop 4692 at least one hour before your trail slot, and at the visitor centre 30 minutes before it. A private-car arrival does not replace the mandatory bus.
Older minors need a legal guardian or an adult authorised by that guardian. Book a boat departing no later than four hours after your trail slot. The difficulty, minimum age and possible climb back are why this day needs more planning than a village visit.
Anaga is a natural reason to choose La Laguna or Santa Cruz. Reservations apply to particular protected routes, including El Pijaral and Monte Aguirre, rather than to every visit to Anaga. El Pijaral bookings open up to 14 days ahead, with the next week released on Mondays at 07:00 Canary Islands time. Check the route you intend to walk and its current access notice.5
For a park-focused family trip, Siam Park is in the south and Loro Parque is at Puerto de la Cruz. The official Siam Park shuttle serves selected southern stops. If choosing a combined ticket, allow separate days and check its validity and transport; a car is one option, rather than a condition of buying the ticket.
Weather, beaches and timing
The south is generally drier and sunnier; northern slopes receive more cloud and moisture. The island’s climate varies with coast and altitude. A sunny afternoon by the sea can call for different clothing from an outing into the hills; pack for the places you intend to visit as well as the hotel base.
Beach days
El Duque and the southern town beaches offer serviced beach days close to accommodation. El Médano’s wind and the northern Atlantic coast suit different plans. Swell, flags and local closure notices matter on every coast: follow lifeguard instructions, and never enter the water under a red flag.
Sun and calima
Bring sun protection for coastal days and warmer layers for La Laguna or the mountains. Calima can bring Saharan dust and affect visibility and air quality; check the forecast when planning hikes. Hotel pool heating and seasonal opening dates are worth confirming for a swimming-focused stay.
Winter sunshine attracts visitors to the south, while school holidays and events can change demand in individual towns. Compare your actual dates and cancellation terms rather than treating one month as reliably cheapest. The Carnival dates above are especially relevant to a Santa Cruz booking.
What to budget for
Build the total around the room, airport journey and planned outings. Then add any parking, meals outside the chosen board basis, spa treatments, equipment storage or private transfers. A beachfront photograph does not tell you which of those a rate includes.
Prices here are in euros. IGIC is the Canary Islands’ indirect tax, with a standard rate of 7%; read the final accommodation total and its tax breakdown, alongside any services payable separately. Teide and Masca access charges belong to the activity budget.6
Questions that help settle the choice
Where should I stay for my first Tenerife holiday?
For a beach-led week, start with Costa Adeje or the lower part of Los Cristianos. Decide whether you want resort facilities or walks through a town with a working port, then check the hotel’s exact address and your airport arrival.
Which base works best without a car?
Promenade addresses in the southern resorts, lower Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz and central La Laguna all support different car-free trips. The decisive question is how many remote outings you want and whether their return transport fits your plans.
Should I split a stay between north and south?
It can help if you want several days around Anaga and La Laguna as well as a southern beach stay. For a shorter visit, one well-chosen base and a planned excursion may use your time better than checking out and moving luggage.
Where should a family start looking?
Compare a self-catering apartment at Parque Santiago IV, a resort near El Duque, or a family hotel in Los Cristianos. Enter every child’s age and check the exact room capacity. H10 Big Sur’s 18+ policy rules it out for a stay with children.
Is El Médano suitable if I do not windsurf?
Yes, if you want its town square, cafés and beach setting and are comfortable with wind. For a holiday built around sheltered lounging, compare the south-western resorts before committing.
Santa Cruz or La Laguna?
Choose Santa Cruz for the larger city, parks, museums and Carnival. Choose La Laguna for historic streets, cooler evenings and outings towards Anaga. You can visit the other by tram; select the city where you want to spend your evenings.
Make the final choice
Start with the days you want on the island, then choose the exact hotel position: beach promenade, uphill garden resort or city street. Match the arrival route and any fixed excursion slots before booking the room.
