Where to Stay in Madeira: Choose Your Base, Then Your Hotel
For a first visit without a car, start with central Funchal. Choose Lido for hotel pools, Calheta for sand, or Santana for a northern touring stay. The important detail is often the final hill to your hotel.

Madeira’s bases on the map
Funchal and its Lido hotel strip occupy the south coast. Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo Airport (FNC) is farther east, near Santa Cruz and Machico. Calheta and Ponta do Sol are separate southwest towns; Porto Moniz is in the northwest, while Santana is on the northeast coast.
OpenFreeMap is unavailable. You can explicitly load an OpenStreetMap fallback.

More places & hotels
1. Funchal centre & Zona Velha: the easiest first base
Stay near the waterfront, Sé cathedral or Mercado dos Lavradores if you want to walk out for dinner and explore without collecting a car each morning. Zona Velha’s Rua de Santa Maria puts restaurants and painted doors close together; the wider centre gives you more choice of streets and hotel styles.
The waterfront is useful for everyday walking; streets rise sharply behind it. If steps or slopes are a concern, have the hotel describe the route from your bus stop to its actual entrance. For sea swimming, look at the bathing complexes along the coast, rather than treating the whole centre as a beach district.

Botanical gardenQuinta Jardins do Lago
Botanical gardens above Funchal, with a courtesy minibus into town.View on BookingThree House’s rooftop hosts music and events, so ask about the programme if quiet evenings matter. Apartment layouts and outlooks vary; choose the space your group needs rather than assuming every room has the rooftop’s view.1
Quinta Jardins do Lago is in São Pedro. Check the courtesy minibus operating times and plan the uphill return, particularly after dinner.

- Castanheiro Boutique Hotel — restored buildings beside the Jesuits’ College and a rooftop pool. Its listing schedules pool and terrace maintenance for 11–31 January 2027.
- The Vine Hotel — contemporary design and a rooftop pool at Rua das Aranhas, in the La Vie complex on the western side of the centre.

2. Funchal Lido & the western hotels: pools and promenade
Choose this side of Funchal when the hotel’s garden, pool and sea access will be part of the holiday. The Lido promenade links bathing areas, while Estrada Monumental carries restaurants, hotels and buses. Ajuda lies farther west; these addresses do not all have the same walk into the old town.
This is a workable car-free base if you are happy to use buses for some city outings. For arrival, choose the Aerobus stop for your particular hotel; “Lido” is too broad to settle the luggage walk.

Ocean View roomMeliá Madeira Mare
Lido promenade access and pools; choose your room’s view.View on BookingReid’s Palace, opened in 1891, is on the eastern approach to Lido at Estrada Monumental 139. Ocean entry involves steps. Choose the room’s named outlook separately.
At Meliá Madeira Mare, garden, side-ocean and front-ocean rooms are distinct categories. The photograph shows Ocean View; its indoor and outdoor pools are shared facilities.
2 more stays
- The Cliff Bay – PortoBay — gardens, pools and a sea pontoon at Estrada Monumental 147; ocean access depends on weather.
- Savoy Palace — a large contemporary resort on Avenida do Infante, nearer the centre than the main Lido promenade. Its Booking conditions currently specify a €400 refundable card damage deposit on arrival, with return within seven days after checkout subject to inspection; check the conditions attached to your reservation.

3. Caniço de Baixo & Garajau: a quieter coastal stay
The inland centre of Caniço, the coastal hotels of Caniço de Baixo, and Garajau farther west are different places to arrive. Choose the actual waterfront cluster you want: Ponta da Oliveira for resort and diving facilities, or Reis Magos for its promenade and beach setting.
You can stay here without driving if your plans centre on the resort, local walks and arranged outings. SIGA routes 555 to Ponta da Oliveira and 556 to Reis Magos connect with Funchal. For the airport journey, check the connection to the lower coastal address rather than assuming an airport bus drops you at the hotel.
Sea-view doubleSentido Galosol
Family rooms and a heated indoor pool.View on BookingSentido Galosol offers connecting-room options, family suites and children’s pool areas. Lifts reach the shared lido, but the final entry into the ocean is by steps. The pictured Double Room Sea View Balcony is one category; garden-view and side-sea-view rooms are separate choices.
2 more stays
- Sentido Galomar – Adults Only — the separate adults-only sister hotel for a spa-focused stay. Families should choose Galosol; confirm acceptance directly if travelling with a 16- or 17-year-old.
- The Views Oasis — family facilities beside the promenade leading to Reis Magos beach.

4. Calheta: a sandy bay and family resort days
Calheta’s beach and marina make a convenient base for a holiday built around swimming, meals and time at the hotel. The imported-sand beach is protected by breakwaters, though swimming still depends on the day’s conditions. Properties uphill in the wider Calheta municipality offer a different stay from a hotel beside the sand.
A beach-centred stay can work with a booked airport transfer and occasional excursions. For repeated western-island trips, a car gives more flexibility. Rabaçal and the PR6/25 Fontes access area are up on the plateau, not a walk from Calheta’s beachfront. Ponta do Sol, below, is another town rather than the other end of this bay.

- Saccharum – Resort and Spa – Savoy Signature — a contemporary design-and-spa alternative by Calheta’s waterfront; check which spa and premium spaces your rate includes.

5. Ponta do Sol: a small village stay for couples
Ponta do Sol has a compact seafront, a pebble beach and streets rising immediately behind the waterfront. Choose it for village evenings and a southwest base, with the hotel’s position on or below the cliff making a real difference to your day.
Infinity poolEstalagem da Ponta do Sol
Clifftop pools above Ponta do Sol, with separate garden and sea-view rooms.View on BookingArrange the route from the village to Estalagem da Ponta do Sol’s reception before setting off with luggage. The village seafront is an option for meals and evening walks.
Without a car: the hotel advertises courtesy buses to Funchal and levada outings—walks alongside Madeira’s irrigation channels. Confirm the timetable and reservation requirements.
Airport departure: its Booking listing offers a free transfer to Madeira International Airport for stays of at least five nights, subject to the listed conditions. For a family booking, confirm the child policy attached to that offer.
Search stays in Ponta do Sol6. Porto Moniz: lava pools and the northwest
Porto Moniz works for a few slower nights around the pools and the northwest coast. Stay in the waterfront village if you want meals and the bathing complexes close by; a rural address elsewhere in the municipality can require a drive for the same errands.
Cachalote’s free-access pools near the aquarium are a different bathing area. Seixal, farther east, has a natural black-sand beach. A car or planned excursions make those outings easier; a transfer-based stay in Porto Moniz itself is possible. Santana, on the other side of the north coast, is a separate base.
Sea-view doubleAqua Natura Madeira
Balconies above Porto Moniz’s managed pools, beside the village waterfront.View on BookingAqua Natura Madeira, at Rotunda da Piscina 3, has a shared wellness area. Keep it distinct from Aqua Natura Bay, a separate hotel near the fort and aquarium.
2 more stays
- Aqua Natura Bay — the alternative with its own indoor and outdoor pools and family-room options.
- Hotel Euro Moniz — another village base near the pools, with mountain-view as well as sea-view room categories.
The managed natural-pool complex charges €3 for visitors older than three; ages three and under enter free. Published hours are 09:00–17:00 in winter / 09:00–19:00 in summer. Follow the day’s flags and staff advice.
Pool concessions and exemptions
Student/card-65 tickets are €1.50, a qualifying municipal-card ticket is €0.50, and documented disability of at least 60% gives free admission. Check the required proof and applicable admission on the day.

7. Santana: vineyards and northeast walking trips
Choose Santana for a rural stay around northeast outings: Queimadas and the Caldeirão Verde walk, Ribeiro Frio, or a few days travelling this coast. Choose Porto Moniz instead when the lava pools and northwest coast will occupy more of your days. São Vicente is a separate northern option, described below.
For walking days, arrange the trailhead pickup and return, and reserve any required entry slot.
Vineyard and poolQuinta do Furão
Vineyards above Santana’s cliffs, with pools and space between day trips.View on BookingQuinta do Furão is at Achada do Gramacho, outside Santana’s centre, rather than by a beach. Its vineyard-facing and sea-facing rooms offer different outlooks. Arrange the final transfer: a bus to Santana town does not reach this rural address.
Search stays in Santana8. Machico: a beach town near the airport
Machico offers a town-and-beach stay on the east coast, with restaurants around the bay and the airport nearby. Its imported-sand beach is one option; the pebble shore and promenade are part of the same town. The exposed landscape of Ponta de São Lourenço is a separate outing east of here.
For an airport bus, check a 702 journey specifically marked as calling at the airport, travelling towards Machico; not every service does. A taxi or arranged transfer is another option. You can manage town days without a car, then plan transport for eastern walks. For PR8/São Lourenço, use the trail-status guidance before travelling.
Double roomWhite Waters

If a balcony matters, confirm your room: the hotel identifies room 302 as having none. Reception is advertised as 08:00–23:00, so arrange access beforehand if arriving on a late flight.

- Baía Madeira Hotel — the former Dom Pedro Madeira, with an outdoor saltwater pool and promenade access; the sandy beach is farther along the bay.

Search stays in MachicoOther bases worth comparing
The eight main choices cover city, resort, beach and northern touring stays. A village apartment or small guesthouse can suit a different routine from a large pool hotel; choose the place first, then compare the space, kitchen and parking you will use.
- Câmara de Lobos: choose it for time around the fishing bay, poncha bars and the seafront. It is the place pictured at the start of this guide. Compare it with Lido if you would rather return to a harbour town than to a hotel strip; an address high in the municipality is a different stay from one by the bay.
- Ribeira Brava: a southwest town with a market and bathing complex, worth comparing with Calheta if everyday town life matters more than a hotel beside sand. The wider municipality includes mountain settings such as Serra de Água, so choose between a coastal address and a rural one deliberately.
- São Vicente: a northern valley-and-forest alternative to Porto Moniz’s pool-front setting. It suits a stay with time for the Laurissilva landscape and the local town, with transport arranged for the outings you want.
- Porto da Cruz: consider a surf-school stay around Alagoa or Maiata if lessons are a main reason for the trip. That is a different beach holiday from Calheta’s protected sandy bay; choose it for the surfing rather than assuming the sea will be calm for lounging.
Airport arrivals, buses and the final walk
Aerobus 500, operated by CAM within SIGA, links the airport with central Funchal, the western hotel strip and Praia Formosa. The published full journey is about 50 minutes; your stop may be earlier. Add baggage collection, waiting and the walk to your accommodation separately.
Aerobus fares, one way:
- Onboard: €6.70 adult; €3.30 for ages 6–12.
- Prepaid: €5.55 adult / €2.75 child, plus a €0.50 GIRO card if needed. Check the selling point and opening hours before relying on this fare.
A prepaid airport ticket covers one Aerobus journey, not a separate onward local bus.
The published airport departure span is 08:30–22:00, with separate timetable columns for weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays/public holidays, and no service on 25 December. For a late arrival, reserve a transfer with clear flight-delay terms, or check the taxi rank and app availability on arrival.2
| Your base | Arrival route to check | The last part of the journey |
|---|---|---|
| Funchal centre | Aerobus to Mercado, Avenida do Mar or the stop suited to your hotel | Old-town lanes and uphill São Pedro addresses need different luggage plans. |
| Lido / western Funchal | Aerobus to the relevant Avenida do Infante, Lido or western stop | Check which side of the road and which entrance serves the hotel. |
| Caniço de Baixo / Garajau | Exact-address taxi/transfer, or a verified airport and local-bus connection | Inland Caniço and the lower coastal hotels are separate destinations. |
| Machico | A suitable airport-calling 702 service, taxi or booked transfer | Match the town stop to the hotel; confirm late check-in. |
| Calheta / Ponta do Sol | Direct transfer or hire car; public transport needs a checked Funchal connection | Beachfront, village and clifftop entrances are different arrival points. |
| Porto Moniz / Santana | Direct transfer or hire car; check the full public-transport route and connections | A town bus stop does not deliver you to a rural hotel such as Quinta do Furão. |
Local buses and a car-free stay
On regular SIGA services, adult onboard tickets are €2.05 within a municipality or €2.65 between municipalities, subject to the route and zones. Ordinary municipal/intermunicipal daily tickets exclude Aerobus. The Regional Tourist product includes it; current adult prices are €13.75 for one day and €36 for seven days, plus a card if required. Choose the product for the journeys you will actually make.
Central Funchal offers the broadest choice of independent outings without a car. Other bases can work with local buses, hotel transport and booked trips, especially if you plan several days around one town. For dispersed trailheads and a changing daily route, a hire car is more flexible. Confirm the gearbox, parking and access road for the particular booking; steep final approaches matter more than a general warning about island roads.
Taxis and ride-hailing
The airport taxi rank is outside Arrivals on level 0. Ask for a metered journey or an agreed quote to the exact hotel. Uber and Bolt operate on Madeira, but prices, pickup points and availability vary; there is no useful island-wide fixed app fare to budget from.
Airport wind and a sea arrival
Wind can disrupt FNC operations. Staying in Machico shortens the road journey to the airport but cannot prevent a delayed or diverted flight; allow flexibility around separately booked onward connections.
Funchal also receives cruise ships and the Lobo Marinho ferry from Porto Santo. Confirm the berth or terminal and the transfer to your hotel. The passenger port and the yacht marina are different arrival points.
Fees worth including in your stay
All amounts below are in euros. Accommodation taxes, walking entry, parking and attraction tickets are separate charges.
Accommodation tax: use the hotel’s municipality
The current standard charge in Funchal, Santa Cruz, Calheta, Ponta do Sol, Santana and Machico is €2 per person per night, capped at seven nights per stay. The maximum is €14 per chargeable guest under the municipality’s stay/accommodation rules. Changing accommodation can start another chargeable period; Calheta expressly applies its cap separately at each property. In the table, regional residents means residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, including Porto Santo. The exemptions differ by municipality.
Municipal age limits and exemptions
| Municipality / article bases | Children | Other relevant exemptions |
|---|---|---|
| Funchal — centre and Lido | Under 13 exempt | Regional residents and documented disability of at least 60%. |
| Santa Cruz — Caniço de Baixo and Garajau | Under 13 and the 13th birthday itself exempt | Complimentary stays offered by the accommodation. |
| Calheta | Ages 12 and under exempt; charged from the 13th birthday night | Regional residents and documented disability of at least 60%; specified approved-event participants can also qualify. The cap applies per accommodation/stay. |
| Ponta do Sol | Under 13 and the 13th birthday itself exempt | Complimentary stays offered by the municipality or property. |
| Santana | Under 13 and the 13th birthday itself exempt | Defined medical, emergency, social-housing and invited stays. |
| Machico | Under 13 exempt | Regional residents, permanent disability of at least 60%, and documented stays caused by airport inoperability, among other defined cases. |
Resident and disability exemptions vary by municipality. Bring the documentation required for the exemption you claim.
A Funchal proposal published on 8 October 2026 would raise the charge to €4 from 1 January 2027; it is a consultation proposal, not the rate currently in force. Check the adopted rule for a 2027 stay.
For Porto Moniz, confirm the municipal charge with the accommodation for your dates; the municipality began a tax-regulation procedure in August 2026.3
Trail tickets, slots and return transport
IFCN’s booking system covers its classified walking routes, rather than every footpath or levada. For independent visitors, most covered routes cost €4.50 per person over 12. Children aged 12 and under, qualifying residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and people with documented disability of at least 60% plus one qualifying accompanying legal guardian are fee-exempt, but still need to reserve.
Full PR1 is one-way beyond Pedra Rija. Arrange the onward walking exit and pickup before reserving; compare the two products below.4
For choosing a base, compare Calheta/Ponta do Sol for western Rabaçal trips, Santana for Queimadas and northeast outings, and Machico for the eastern peninsula. Each needs transport to the trailhead.
PR1 products, current route notices and parking
PR1 tickets: the Areeiro–Pedra Rija out-and-back section costs €4.50; the full traverse towards Pico Ruivo costs €10.50.
Choose the matching reservation and check current IFCN route notices.
Tunnels, steep steps and a final climb make the full traverse a different choice from a short viewpoint visit.
The full PR1 route reopened on 1 May 2026. IFCN’s status table dated 2 October 2026 lists the western tunnel route open and the eastern Pico das Torres alternative closed. Conditions can change: use the IFCN route-status table and reserve the selected route and entry slot through SIMplifica.
PR8/São Lourenço is operating with signed diversions during restoration begun on 30 September 2026; check the current IFCN notice.
Parking may be extra: the official PR9 page lists Queimadas parking at €2 per hour, separately from trail admission.4
Cable car, toboggans and viewpoints
Optional outings and their extra costs
- Funchal–Monte cable car: standard adult €16 one way / €22 return. Ages 0–6 are free; the main operator site advertises a 50% reduction for ages 7–14—check the child total at purchase. A Glass Floor Cabin upgrade is +€10, sold at the stations subject to availability. This ticket does not include garden admission or the separate Botanical Garden cable car.
- Monte toboggans: €30 for one person, €40 for two, or €60 for three per sledge. Published operation is Monday–Saturday, 09:00–18:00, with departures closing at 17:45 and earlier closure possible for weather or queues. Buy on site. The ride finishes in Livramento, not central Funchal; arrange the remaining descent. Three-person rides are unavailable on wet ground.
- Cabo Girão viewpoint: €5 for visitors over 12. Ages 12 and under, residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with the required proof, and visitors with reduced mobility/in wheelchairs are exempt under the current portal rules. It is a separate viewpoint ticket.5
A useful five-night calculation
For two chargeable adults spending five nights at a hotel with the €2 municipal rate, accommodation tax is €20. Two €4.50 walks each add €18, making €38 for those two items. Add the actual transport, parking and excursions you choose.
Beaches, weather and how long to stay
Which coast for swimming?
Calheta and Machico have imported-sand beaches. Madeira also has natural black sand at Seixal and natural copper-coloured sand at Prainha, near Caniçal. Elsewhere, many hotel stays revolve around pools, pebble beaches or bathing platforms. Choose the access you want, then follow local swimming conditions.
Porto Santo is a separate island, requiring its own sailing and hotel-transfer plan.
Porto Santo ferry: time, check-in and fare scope
Lobo Marinho’s crossing takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, excluding check-in and transfers at either end. The operator asks foot passengers to check in at least 30 minutes before departure, vehicles one hour before. Its standard 2026 adult Tourist Class return fare is €72.02 in April–September or €58.90 in January–March and October–December, plus the monthly fuel surcharge. Check the sailing calendar and fare for your date; a beach stay there deserves its own transport plan.
Weather and the hills
The south is generally warmer and drier; the north and higher ground are more exposed to rain, wind and cloud. Carry layers for mountain outings even when the coast feels warm, and check trail notices and sea conditions on the day.
If hotel pools are central to a winter stay, confirm the particular pool’s heating and opening arrangements. For New Year in Funchal, compare the actual room and transport options early rather than assuming winter means lower prices.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Funchal for my whole first trip?
It is a good choice for a shorter first visit, especially without a car. With about a week and several northern walks planned, consider two or three nights in Santana or Porto Moniz. Choose the second stop around the part of the north you want to explore, rather than treating both towns as interchangeable.
Which base is easiest with children?
Calheta suits families who want a sandy beach beside the hotel. Lido gives more city access alongside resort facilities; Caniço de Baixo adds family resorts around the lido or Reis Magos promenade. Check the exact room capacity and the route to the water—“family hotel” alone does not settle either.
Can I stay outside Funchal without hiring a car?
Yes, particularly for a town or resort stay with arranged transfers and selected excursions. Machico’s centre, Calheta’s beachfront and Porto Moniz’s village offer different versions of that holiday. A remote villa or Quinta do Furão needs a more deliberate transport plan than a hotel beside a town bus stop.
Is the north worth an overnight stay?
Choose Porto Moniz for the pools and northwest coast, or Santana for a rural hotel and northeast trips. Both let you spend more time locally. Neither is the same base as São Vicente, and a north-coast booking should not depend on a promise of sunny swimming days.
How many nights should I allow?
For a first island visit, five to seven nights is a useful starting point. A shorter car-free break can focus on Funchal and one or two arranged outings. For a longer trip, split bases only when it removes repeated journeys you actually intend to make.
Making the final choice
Start with the days you want most: dinners in Funchal, time beside Calheta’s sand, or early departures for northern walks. Then check the hotel’s entrance, the room category and the return journey from your main outing. Those details decide how the base works once you arrive.
