Where to Stay in Dubrovnik: Old Town, Beach or Harbour?

For a sightseeing-led first visit, start just outside Pile Gate. Choose Ploče for Old Town views, Lapad or Babin Kuk for beach and resort time, or Gruž when ferries shape your plans.

1. Old Town: inside the walls

Stay inside the walls for Stradun, historic lanes and dinner a short walk from your room.

At Stari Grad, the room list is aimed at two guests. Distinguish the main building from annex accommodation, including your floor and luggage assistance.

The Old Town is pedestrian: the lane, building and room floor determine the final walk from your drop-off. A room near Stradun can have a different approach from one high in the side lanes.

Villa Four Winds — A stone-house guesthouse at Kunićeva 23 worth comparing when you want an Old Town room rather than hotel facilities. Check the stepped approach; this is not one of the similarly named Four Winds II, III or IV properties.

For a quieter room, ask about the actual frontage and nearby evening activity rather than treating every address inside the walls alike. For luggage, ask the host to name the best gate and send the final walking route.

2. Ploče: Old Town views

Choose Ploče for waterfront views of the Old Town and access through the eastern gate.

Excelsior stands at Frana Supila 12, with the Old Town 0.6 km away according to the operator. Select the named room category for a sea, partial-sea or Old Town view. The hotel has its own bathing area; Banje is a separate town beach.

Lower Frana Supila and the streets climbing above it have different approaches. A hillside apartment may mean a substantial uphill return; get the final route from your drop-off point to the property.

Ragusa City Walls Apartments — A smaller-property alternative at Maestra Đela Jusića 20, outside the walls on the Ploče side. Confirm the individual unit’s view, steps and cooking equipment instead of inferring them from “City Walls Apartments.”

For arrival, the airport shuttle’s inbound Ploče-side stop may suit this base, but the outbound stop is different. Match both journeys to the hotel’s instructions, especially with luggage.

3. Pile and Boninovo: walking to the Old Town

Start near Pile Gate for a sightseeing-led first visit: the western entrance and bus interchange combine Old Town walks with trips farther out.

Pile is the gate end of this base; Boninovo and the Miramare/Montovjerna fringe extend farther west. Choose Pile for the shortest return after dinner, or the farther-west hotels for their sea setting and facilities.

Hotel Lero — A conventional hotel at Iva Vojnovića 14, worth comparing when hotel facilities matter more than an iconic view. Check the walking route or bus connection; do not book it expecting to be beside Pile Gate. (source)

Fort Lovrjenac is the landmark beside the gate, but the bus forecourt is also a busy arrival point. Ask for the room location when quiet is a priority. The airport shuttle does not stop at Pile; a transfer to your hotel may be simpler than taking bags across town from the Ploče side.

4. Lapad: bay and promenade

Choose Lapad for a holiday that mixes swimming with Old Town visits. Spend beach time around the bay, take the bus for sightseeing, then return to the promenade for dinner. Choose this over Babin Kuk if the waterfront neighbourhood matters more than a resort activity programme.

Kompas is at Kardinala Stepinca 21, with the Old Town 4.1 km away according to the operator. With a pushchair or mobility aid, confirm the entrance–room–promenade route.

The bay promenade centres the stay around meals and walks. Outer-shore hotels offer a more property-led beach stay, with a different bus stop and approach.

For sightseeing, use the stop that fits your address: route 4 serves the Palace side, while 6 serves the Babin Kuk–Pile corridor through Lapad. Check the operator’s current timetable rather than relying on one walking time or frequency for the whole area.

5. Babin Kuk: resort base

Babin Kuk suits a stay built around pools, children’s activities and time at the resort, with the Old Town as an outing. Compare Lapad instead if you would rather make the bay promenade your evening routine.

Route 6 connects Babin Kuk with Pile; route 7 links the main bus station at Kantafig/Gruž with Babin Kuk. Use the current timetable for your stop. With luggage, a taxi or arranged transfer can simplify the final leg.

6. Gruž: ferries and buses

Gruž makes most sense when ferry departures or an onward bus shape the trip. A smaller hotel by the harbour can simplify those travel days; for a holiday spent mainly inside the walls, start with Old Town or Pile instead.

Berkeley is a 25-room, family-owned hotel at Andrije Hebranga 116A. Send the hotel your ferry or bus details for the route to your actual departure point.

The main bus station, ferry berths and hotels along the harbour are separate locations. Some harbour-view accommodation is well uphill, so match the address and approach to your plans.

Hotel Adria — Consider the harbour views and published parking if arriving by car. Its Radnička 46 address is on the hillside, with a D8/E65 road approach; it is not a port-level alternative to Berkeley for carrying bags on foot. (source)

A port-level address is more convenient for carrying bags than an uphill harbour view. Include the daily bus or taxi journey when comparing Gruž with a sightseeing base.

Before you book: the details that change the stay

  • Arrival/access: Ask the property for the last permitted vehicle drop-off, outdoor steps, lift access and room floor. For an accessible stay, confirm the full room–breakfast–pool–street route.
  • Booked room: Check the named room category and capacity for your group, including beds, view, kitchen and balcony.
  • Total/inclusions: Compare the total for your guests and dates, check whether breakfast, parking and tourist tax are included, and read the cancellation terms.

Distinguish a rocky bathing platform, a pebble beach and a waterfront location. If swimming matters, confirm the entry into the water and the route back to your room.

Airport arrival and departure

The Platanus shuttle costs €10 one way or €15 return. The ticket interface and inbound operator page list a 15-day return validity. Children under six travel free, and one suitcase is included. Buy online or at the counter, not onboard. Airport departures are linked to arrivals, approximately 30 minutes after a flight, rather than a guaranteed fixed connection.

From the airport: the city stop is on the Ploče Gate side, followed by Gruž main bus station. To the airport: the operator lists Gruž station, platform 8 → Grawe → Cable Car stop. There is no Pile stop, and the Cable Car departure stop is not the same as the inbound Ploče-side drop-off. Use the dated timetable for the return journey. 11

For Pile, a hillside apartment or a resort on the peninsula, compare a direct transfer with the shuttle plus its final leg. A quoted transfer to the nearest permitted drop-off still leaves any pedestrian part of the hotel approach to arrange.

City buses

Libertas lists €1.73 for a one-hour city ticket, valid from first validation, versus €2.50 for one ride bought onboard. A 24-hour ticket costs €5.31, also starting at first validation. Check the route and timetable for your actual stop. 12

Tourist tax

For standard commercial accommodation in Dubrovnik in 2026, the tourist tax is €2.65 per person per night from 1 April to 30 September, and €1.85 during the rest of the year. Children under 12 are exempt; those aged 12 to under 18 pay half. Check whether it is already included in your total: accommodation categories and collection arrangements differ, and this is not a universal extra cash charge for every apartment. 13

The Walls and Dubrovnik Pass

The operator’s FAQ says a reservation is not required for the City Walls. You can buy online, but do not confuse selecting a date with a mandatory timed-entry slot. The Walls ticket includes Fort Lovrjenac. Check that day’s opening hours and allow around two hours in your itinerary for the exposed walk, rather than scheduling it tightly between other bookings. 14

Adult ticketMarch–NovemberDecember–February
City Walls€40 (2026 shop tariff)Check the operator’s winter tariff
Dubrovnik Pass: 1 day€40€20
Dubrovnik Pass: 3 days€50€25
Dubrovnik Pass: 7 days€60€30

The Pass uses the adopted municipal tariff; select the applicable season when buying. 15 16

For an adult doing the Walls plus museums or city-bus journeys, the Pass is worth comparing before buying separate tickets. It includes participating attractions and city transport, but not the Platanus airport shuttle. Activation starts at first use, including obtaining the bus ticket, so do not activate it early if your sightseeing starts later. Children under seven enter the Walls free; compare the current child ticket and Pass separately for older children rather than applying the adult calculation to the whole family. 17 18

Island trips and Mount Srđ: choose the right departure point

Lokrum leaves from the Old Harbour, not Gruž. The official €30 adult ticket includes reserve entry and the return boat; the 2026 tariff lists €5 for children from seven to under eighteen, with free travel and entry before the seventh birthday. The three- and seven-day Dubrovnik Passes offer 20% and 30% adult discounts respectively. Check the operating-day timetable and return sailing. (source)

The Elafiti Islands connect through Gruž. Jadrolinija passenger line 807 serves Koločep, Lopud and Suđurađ on Šipan. Its ordinary adult single fare from Dubrovnik to any of those three stops is €5.40 from 29 May to 27 September 2026, and €3.40 during the rest of 2026. Buy the departure you intend to use; the operator says the ticket reserves a place on that sailing. (source)

Mount Srđ’s cable car has a separate ticket: €30 adult return, or €8 return for children aged 4–12; younger children travel free under the operator’s age conditions. Its published timetable closes December–March, and weather can interrupt operation. Do not choose a hotel for a winter cable-car itinerary without checking that it runs. (source)

Which base works in your season?

For a summer sightseeing trip, a gate-side base makes it easier to split the day and return to your room. For a swimming-and-rest trip, Lapad or Babin Kuk gives the hotel and waterfront a larger role. Visit the centre at a time that suits your plans rather than relying on a fixed “cruise-free” window.

For spring, autumn or winter, a central hotel can make more sense than a resort when plans focus on museums and the Old Town. For a resort stay, confirm that its pools, children’s programme and restaurants operate during your visit.

FAQ

Where should I stay on a first visit?
Start near Pile Gate for sightseeing on foot with hotel services outside the pedestrian core. Choose Old Town instead if the historic setting is the reason for your stay, or Ploče if a view of the walls matters more than the shortest gate-side approach.
Old Town or Lapad?
Choose Old Town for a short city stay and evenings in the centre. Choose Lapad when the bay and time by the water matter every day. The deciding trade-off is a pedestrian historic setting versus a separate bus trip for sightseeing.
Where should I look on a smaller budget?
Compare small guesthouses such as Villa Four Winds with apartments and smaller properties in Gruž. A kitchen can reduce the need to eat out, but compare the full room total and travel costs. Do not pay for a view, spa or meal plan that you will barely use.
What works best with children or a pushchair?
For activities and family room categories, start with Valamar Tirena. For a bay-centred stay, consider Kompas, after confirming the exact room and step-free route. A kitchen-led booking such as Scalini serves a different need and is not automatically large enough for a family. Hotel More’s 14+ policy rules it out with younger children.
Which area is quietest?
There is no useful blanket winner. A resort may have entertainment, a gate-side hotel may face traffic and a guesthouse may face a restaurant lane. Choose the room’s position and the hotel’s style; for a relaxation-led resort, Argosy is one alternative to a family-activity property.
Should I bring a car?
Not just to move between these six bases. A car makes more sense for a wider road trip, provided your hotel confirms parking and the permitted approach. Adria is a specific parking-led option; near the Old Town, arrange access with the property before driving into the restricted area.
How many nights should I book?
Our planning suggestion is three nights for a city-led first visit, or four if you want a separate island or beach day. With a longer stay, give the room layout and everyday journey more weight than the most dramatic photograph.
