Find your base on the island
Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is east of Palma, on the island’s southern side.
OpenFreeMap is unavailable. You can explicitly load an OpenStreetMap fallback.

One base or two?
For two to four nights, keep one base. A Palma stay suits museums, markets and dinners; a resort stay suits days that begin and end at the beach. An airport connection does not make every other coast an easy day trip.
For six to eight nights, two nights in Palma followed by four or five on your chosen coast is a useful split. If mountains and eastern coves are the main reason for travelling, split between the Sóller area and an eastern or southeastern base instead. Allow for packing and the transfer between hotels.
For a car-free beach week, compare the airport routes and seasons before choosing a coast. A car earns its keep for scattered coves, rural accommodation or frequent trips between coasts.
1. Palma — city days on foot
Palma’s old town is a medieval grid of stone streets around the Gothic cathedral, with restored townhouses, squares and cafés. Choose it for a short stay built around walking, culture and food. For a room beside a resort beach, start with one of the coastal bases below.
Rooftop terraceHotel Almudaina
Central Palma rooms, with a shared rooftop terrace over town.View on BookingAlmudaina’s pictured Sky Area is shared; a bedroom view depends on the room category.
For daily bus outings, consider the distance to Plaça d’Espanya and the Estació Intermodal. The historic Sóller railway has its own nearby station; it is separate from the TIB rail platforms in the Intermodal. Some old-town lanes are pedestrian-only and cobbled. Ask where a taxi can drop you and whether there are steps between the street, reception and room. Arrange driving access before bringing a hire car into the centre.
Santa Catalina adds market and restaurant streets; Portixol and Es Molinar put the seafront promenade first. The separate guide to where to stay in Palma compares these neighbourhoods, the marina, Son Armadams and the Intermodal area in detail.
A café breakfast also gives you a reason to explore: try an ensaïmada with coffee, or pa amb oli, bread with tomato and olive oil, often served with cheese or ham. Compare the hotel’s breakfast supplement with how you actually like to eat.

2. Palmanova, Magaluf and Santa Ponsa
These are separate southwest resorts. Palmanova’s beaches and promenade suit a straightforward beach holiday; neighbouring Magaluf combines a broad beach with a substantial nightlife scene. Santa Ponsa lies farther west around another bay. A listing in one is not automatically within a pleasant walk of the others.
Family junior suiteMeliá Calviá Beach
Magaluf beachfront hotel with children’s pools and connecting-room options for families.View on BookingAt Meliá Calviá Beach, The Level Family Junior Suite has a sofa bed alongside the hotel’s connecting-room options. The Level welcomes families; a separate adults-only pool has its own restriction. Check the accepted occupancy for your children’s ages and the activity programme for your dates.
For a quieter night, look at the hotel’s street and room position relative to bars, particularly around Punta Ballena in Magaluf. A seafront address alone cannot settle the noise question. Palmanova is a sensible starting point for families who want beach and restaurant choices without planning evenings around clubs.
The A11 airport corridor serves Palmanova, Magaluf and Santa Ponsa. Its airport service is not a shuttle for local trips between resorts. Santa Ponsa is worth choosing in its own right if its bay and your hotel are where you expect to spend the week.

3. Sóller and Port de Sóller
Sóller is the inland town, with cafés around Plaça de la Constitució and the orange-growing valley behind it. Port de Sóller is the seaside settlement on the horseshoe bay. Choose the town for village life and the valley; choose the port for a promenade and beach alongside mountain outings.
Superior roomEden Nord Sóller
A pool and mountain setting, back from the waterfront.View on BookingEden Nord Sóller has no private hotel parking. The Basic Double has no balcony. The hotel lists lifts but says it is not fully adapted for reduced mobility, so discuss the approach and the exact room if step-free access matters.
The promenade and the streets climbing behind it are different walking experiences. Both the port’s beaches and the inland town can be part of a car-free stay: TIB 204 runs from Palma to the port, while the historic train and tram make a separate scenic outing. See the fares and directions below.
For a mountain stay, look separately at Deià, Valldemossa and Fornalutx, or an agroturismo in the valley. Stone lanes, slopes and the distance from a bus stop matter more than the word “village” in a listing. A car gives more freedom for scattered trailheads, but arrange parking before reserving a rural property.
2 more stays
- Jumeirah Mallorca — a clifftop resort above Port de Sóller; allow for the height above the waterfront.
- La Residencia — a mountainside hotel in Deià for a village and Tramuntana stay.

4. Port de Pollença
Port de Pollença suits days divided between the beach, the waterfront and the pine-lined promenade. Pollença town is inland, about seven kilometres away. Choose the port for walking to the sea; choose the old town or its countryside for an inland stay with separate beach trips.
Sea-view balconyHoposa Uyal
Bay-facing rooms and a garden pool across from the sandy beach.View on BookingAt Hoposa Uyal, cross the seafront road for the beach. Sea View and Side Sea View are different categories; the garden pool and adults-only rooftop pool have different eligibility.
You can stay here without a car if the bay is the main attraction. The airport connection is A1 into Palma followed by TIB 301, which serves Pollença and the port. It does not require a detour through Alcúdia. A rural hotel outside the town creates a different daily transport problem.
Formentor is a nearby excursion, but seasonal road controls affect access. In 2026 the restriction period ran 15 May–18 October, 10:00–22:00: access to beach parking depended on capacity, while the lighthouse section required authorisation. Check the current DGT notice and TIB 334 before driving there on a future trip.2
1 more stay
- Son Brull — a rural hotel in an eighteenth-century former monastery outside Pollença; plan transport to the town and sea.

5. Alcúdia, Port d’Alcúdia and Playa de Muro
The north’s long sandy bay makes a useful starting point for a family beach holiday. Alcúdia is the walled historic town inland. Port d’Alcúdia combines the harbour with a substantial beach resort. Playa de Muro continues farther along the bay, with hotels beside the sand and a less developed stretch at Es Comú.
Apartment living areaSofia Alcudia Beach
Beachfront location, with kitchen facilities in the Apartment category.View on BookingAt Sofia Alcudia Beach, the named Apartment category is 33 m², accommodates one to four guests and includes a sofa bed and small kitchen. Choose that category if self-catering is the reason for booking; the kitchen is not a feature of every room type.
Choose the old town if evening streets and historic surroundings matter more than stepping onto sand. Choose the port for a mix of beach and harbour restaurants, or Playa de Muro for a stay centred on the long beach. The gently shelving shore is useful with small children, but conditions change: follow beach flags and supervise children in the water.
The summer A32 serves the town, port and beach corridor through Playa de Muro to Can Picafort. Check the hotel’s actual stop: “Alcúdia” in a search result can cover very different locations. Leave a car outside the pedestrian streets when visiting the walled centre.
2 more stays
- Zafiro Palace Alcudia — a larger resort in Port d’Alcúdia with pools and a mini-club, set inland from the beach.
- Iberostar Selection Playa de Muro Village — family rooms and direct beach access in Playa de Muro, farther along the bay.

6. Cala Millor and the east
Cala Millor suits a holiday built around a long beach, a promenade and an apartment with space for family routines. Sa Coma is a separate resort beyond the Punta de n’Amer headland. Choose the exact beach you want to return to each evening, rather than treating the east coast as a single neighbourhood.
Apartment living roomHipotels Dunas
Cala Millor beachfront apartments with separate bedrooms, kitchens and living space.View on BookingHipotels Dunas is in Cala Millor, despite its address on Avinguda de Sa Coma. The Side Sea View 1 Bedroom Apartment has two sofa beds in its living/dining room, in addition to the separate bedroom and kitchen. Enter everyone’s ages to check the permitted occupancy.
The summer A42 links the airport with Porto Cristo, Sa Coma, Cala Millor and Cala Bona. Porto Cristo and the Coves del Drach make a possible outing from this side of the island; check the onward journey and return before committing to a timed cave visit.
Cala Ratjada is farther northeast, around a harbour and the beaches of Capdepera. The harbour and Cala Agulla offer different settings, so compare the hotel address with your preferred beach. It is a separate base choice, not part of the Cala Millor promenade or the A42 resort corridor.

7. Cala d’Or — southeast coves
Cala d’Or is a collection of small bays and neighbourhoods around a marina. It works for a week of nearby coves, with outings towards Santanyí and Mondragó. A hotel by Cala Esmeralda and one across the marina in Cala Egos give you different walks to the beach and dinner.
Seaside terraceInturotel Cala Esmeralda
Cala Esmeralda hotel with a beach club; hotel guests must be 16+.View on BookingAt Inturotel Cala Esmeralda, sea views, private pools and roof terraces belong to particular room or suite categories. The hotel’s minimum guest age is 16.
A car is useful for changing coves most days, but you can arrive by A51 to Campos and TIB 515 onward to Cala d’Or. Check the final connection as carefully as the airport bus. Staying close to the cove you will use most makes a car-free holiday more practical.
Beach access varies. Cala Serena and Caló des Pou have steps; a nearby hotel does not establish a step-free route onto the sand. At Mondragó, S’Amarador has a walk from the parking area and a coastal path towards Sa Font de n’Alis. Check the actual approach if you have a pushchair or limited mobility.

8. Colònia de Sant Jordi — south coast
Choose Colònia de Sant Jordi for a small seaside town, beach outings and the possibility of a boat trip to Cabrera. The harbour, Es Port beach and the beaches towards Es Trenc are distinct locations. Decide whether you prefer the harbour side or a base closer to the town’s western sands.
Superior Room Sea View terraceHotel Honucai
Harbour-side rooms and a rooftop terrace in Colònia de Sant Jordi.View on BookingAt Honucai, the photographed private terrace belongs to Superior Room Sea View. The shared rooftop hosts a seasonal bar programme; ask about room position and dates if evenings at the hotel matter to you.
Es Trenc is a separate outing from this hotel. Likewise, a Cabrera sailing depends on the operator’s schedule and sea conditions. A car helps with trips around the south; for a stay centred on town and nearby beaches, the airport route is A51 to Campos followed by TIB 517.

9. Can Pastilla and Playa de Palma
Can Pastilla lies at the northwestern end of the beach corridor, beside Cala Estància. Playa de Palma extends southeast towards El Arenal, also signed S’Arenal. These addresses should be compared street by street: the whole coastline does not share one nightlife pattern.
Sea-view double roomBQ Aguamarina
Faces Cala Estància in Can Pastilla, with a rooftop pool.View on BookingAt BQ Aguamarina, select a named sea-view room for the pictured outlook.
Can Pastilla suits a short beach stay with access to Palma, especially when you want to avoid an island-crossing transfer. Central Playa de Palma has busy entertainment areas, including around Megapark; El Arenal is farther along the shore. Check nearby venues and room orientation if sleep is a priority.
The EMT A2 is the airport route for this coastal corridor. Match its stop to the hotel and check the timetable for your flight; proximity to the airport does not mean that every hotel has a convenient walk from a bus stop. Aircraft, road traffic and evening venues are all worth considering for the particular address.

Arrival, luggage and getting around
EMT operates the city and airport A1/A2 buses; TIB operates the interurban network, including Aerotib airport services. Their payment rules differ.4
Airport routes, seasons and late connections
Which airport route fits your base?
| Base | Public-transport route | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Palma | EMT A1 to the centre | Closest stop and final walk to the hotel. |
| Can Pastilla / Playa de Palma / S’Arenal | EMT A2 | Hotel stop and your flight time. |
| Palmanova / Magaluf / Santa Ponsa | TIB A11 | Exact stop; seasonal reach beyond these resorts changes. |
| Alcúdia / Port d’Alcúdia / Playa de Muro | TIB A32 in the published summer timetable | Check the winter route and onward service beyond Port d’Alcúdia. |
| Port de Pollença | A1 to Palma, then TIB 301 | Both timetables and the Intermodal connection. |
| Sóller / Port de Sóller | A1 to Palma, then TIB 204 | 204 reaches the port; the tourist railway is separate. |
| Cala Millor / Sa Coma / Cala Bona | TIB A42 in the published summer timetable | Check the winter route and onward connections from Manacor. |
| Cala d’Or | A51 to Campos, then 515 | The last local connection. |
| Colònia de Sant Jordi | A51 to Campos, then 517 | The last local connection. |
The published A32 and A42 summer timetables end on 31 October 2026. Check the route for your travel date, particularly across the seasonal change. For an airport return, allow time for check-in and delays, not just the scheduled bus arrival.
Late flights need special attention in the south. In the timetables checked, the last 515 and 517 leave Campos at 22:40. The A51 leaving the airport at 23:40 arrives after them. All times are local to Mallorca; a late airport bus is useful only if the onward connection still runs.5
Fares and payment
EMT A1/A2: airport single €5 cash, or €3 for the first bank-card traveller with the published 40% discount. These routes accept airport journeys, not local trips along the corridor.4
TIB: one-to-four-hop airport journeys cost €4.05–€8.10 for the first bank-card passenger, or €6.75–€13.50 cash. Use the journey planner for your stop.
EMT and TIB: tapping, groups and cash limits
| Operator | Card and group use | Cash |
|---|---|---|
| EMT | Tap when boarding; group discounts cover up to five people on one card. | Notes up to €10. |
| TIB | Use the same card/device at boarding and exit. For up to five people, tap once per person on boarding and once for the group on exit. Qualifying TIB transfers are included. | Notes up to €20. Ticket covers one line without transfers. |
Free travel in 2026 is tied to eligible personal Única/Intermodal cards. Ordinary holiday visitors should budget for bank-card or cash fares.4
Taxis, cars and luggage
The published airport taxi minimum is €16.95, including the airport supplement and first seven kilometres. It is a minimum, not a quote to central Palma or a resort. Use the official airport rank and keep the receipt; ordinary luggage and card payment do not carry an extra fee under the published tariff.2
For car hire, compare the total including cover, excess, deposit, fuel terms and parking. Check the supplier’s driver-age, licence and payment-card conditions. A car parked for a whole Palma city break adds little; collect it when your island touring begins.
For awkward flight times, ask the hotel about luggage storage first. If using a separate store, check its opening hours and bag limits against the actual arrival or collection time. In historic centres and hillside villages, ask for the drop-off point before dragging a case towards a map pin.
The Sóller train and tram
The wooden train runs Palma–Sóller; a separate tram links Sóller and Port de Sóller. Published standard fares are €23 single / €30 return for the train, €10 each way for the tram, or €40 for the combined return from Palma. The operator sells train tickets at the station and selected journeys online; tram singles are sold on board.
Services reduce in November. Check the operator’s dated timetable and any maintenance announcement for a winter trip, and make sure the return tram connects with your train. Use TIB 204 for the ordinary Palma–port bus alternative.2

Tourist tax and the real accommodation total
The Balearic Sustainable Tourism Tax, often called the ecotasa, applies per person per night in accommodation; children under 16 are exempt. High season is 1 May–31 October; low season is 1 November–30 April. These are base rates before 10% VAT, for the first eight nights in the same establishment:
Tourist tax by legal accommodation category
| Accommodation | May–Oct | Nov–Apr |
|---|---|---|
| 5★ or 4★ superior hotel / aparthotel | €4 | €1 |
| 4★ or 3★ superior hotel / aparthotel | €3 | €0.75 |
| 1–3★ hotel / aparthotel | €2 | €0.50 |
| Tourist apartments: 4 keys / 4 keys superior | €4 | €1 |
| Tourist apartments: 3 keys superior | €3 | €0.75 |
| Tourist apartments: 1–3 keys; holiday homes | €2 | €0.50 |
| Rural / agroturismo / turismo de interior* | €2 | €0.50 |
| Hostales, guesthouses, campsites and refuges | €1 | €0.25 |
Rural establishments that opt for a star classification are taxed by that classification.
Low-season rates are 75% lower. From the ninth night in the same establishment, the applicable rate is reduced by a further 50%. Moving hotels starts a new stay for this purpose.6
For example, two adults spending seven nights in a 4★ superior hotel during May–October pay €61.60: €4 × 1.10 VAT × 2 people × 7 nights. In an ordinary 4★ hotel, the same example is €46.20. These are tax calculations, not room-price quotes.
Check the booking’s total-price and charges information, then the property’s collection instructions. The tax is not invariably excluded from every displayed total, and collection is not invariably at check-out. Add parking, meals and any required transport when comparing an apartment, a city hotel and a resort package.
Before paying: access, apartments and season
Palma driving access: an old-town hotel may need to arrange your vehicle’s ACIRE authorisation. Send the registration plate and request the permitted approach before driving in. Palma’s low-emission zone is a separate check with your rental supplier; ACIRE access does not itself include permission to park in a regulated space.
Holiday apartments: ask for the registration number and check the property name and address in the official Balearic accommodation register. Rules for tourist homes, licensed apartment establishments and individual municipalities differ. The restriction on new tourist capacity in multi-unit residential buildings does not mean every existing apartment is illegal.6
Season and facilities: check that the hotel accepts your dates and which pools, restaurants and children’s activities will operate. A heated indoor pool does not establish the temperature of an outdoor pool. For a winter trip, Palma is a useful starting point for city days; a coastal hotel can still work when its services and the surrounding transport fit your plans.
Room and access: reserve the named category for the bed layout or view you need; confirm the route from street to room and beach.
Questions that settle the choice
Palma or a beach resort for a first trip?
Choose Palma if most of your plans are city walks, restaurants and museums. Choose a beach base if swimming is the main daily activity. With a week, a short Palma stay followed by one coast gives both without daily cross-island journeys.
Alcúdia Bay or Port de Pollença with children?
Start with Port d’Alcúdia or Playa de Muro for broad sand and family apartment choices. Compare Port de Pollença if the promenade and its bay appeal more. Compare the exact room layout, beach access and transfer for your family.
Where can we stay without a car?
Palma is the simplest city choice. For a beach stay, compare the airport routes to Palmanova, Can Pastilla, the Alcúdia corridor and Cala Millor. Port de Sóller and Port de Pollença are also workable with a change in Palma. Plan rural outings separately.
Which base suits coves rather than a long beach?
Choose Cala d’Or for several small bays and access to the southeast. Choose Colònia de Sant Jordi for the southern coast and harbour. If you prefer a long beach at your hotel, compare Alcúdia Bay and Cala Millor instead.
Where should we stay for nightlife?
Palma suits evenings that move between restaurants and bars. Magaluf and parts of Playa de Palma have concentrated entertainment areas. Choose the street as well as the resort, particularly if some of your group want early nights.
Mallorca or Majorca?
Both names refer to the same island. This guide uses Mallorca; hotel listings may use either spelling.
Is Magaluf or Palmanova better for us?
Start with Palmanova for a beach holiday with restaurants and promenades. Choose Magaluf if its beach or nightlife suits the trip, then check the hotel’s street and room position around Punta Ballena. Santa Ponsa is a separate bay farther west.
How much is Mallorca’s tourist tax?
It depends on the legal accommodation category, season and length of stay. Under-16s are exempt. A 4★ superior hotel in May–October charges €4 per adult per night before 10% VAT for the first eight nights. The full table and examples explain the reductions.
Are Mallorca hotels open all year?
Palma is a useful starting point for a winter city trip; a coastal hotel can work when its services and transport fit your plans. See the season and facilities checklist before booking.
