Where to Stay in Krakow: Choose the Right Neighbourhood
For a first visit, stay in Stare Miasto for Rynek and Wawel, or Kazimierz for restaurants and evenings out. Choose the station for early departures; beside the Vistula, check the hotel’s actual bank and nearest bridge.

Krakow areas at a glance
Old Town and Kazimierz share Wawel’s side of the Vistula; Podgórze is across the river. Use the bridge and station markers to see how a hotel fits both your evening walks and any rail departure.
OpenFreeMap is unavailable. You can explicitly load an OpenStreetMap fallback.
Choose a closer view or an area below for overlapping places. Airport and Nowa Huta have their own views.

More sights & hotel points
1. Stare Miasto: Rynek and Wawel on foot
Choose the Old Town if you want to step straight into Krakow’s historic streets. Pijarska and St Florian’s Gate suit arrivals from the station; Kanonicza, at the southern end, places you by Wawel. These are different ends of the same walkable centre.
Double roomHotel Copernicus
Historic rooms on Kanonicza, with Wawel at the street’s southern end.View on BookingAt Copernicus, Kanonicza 16, Double Rooms are 30 m² with air conditioning, but their windows overlook the patio or are set into the roof. Ask for the outlook you prefer; the category does not promise a castle view.
Standard roomHotel Polski Pod Białym Orłem
Stay by St Florian’s Gate, with Rynek inside the old walls.View on BookingAt Polski, Pijarska 17, the Standard Double accommodates two; confirm double or twin beds and the individual room arrangement with reception.

Grand Ascot Hotel — on Szujskiego in Piasek, west of the Planty; closer to Rynek than the station.
For light sleepers, look beyond the district name. Ask about rooms facing Szewska, Floriańska or Rynek, nearby late venues, and whether you can keep the windows shut comfortably. St Mary’s hejnał sounds hourly, including overnight: a courtyard outlook alone cannot guarantee that you will not hear it.2
2. Kazimierz: cafés, Jewish heritage and evenings out
Kazimierz has a character of its own, with synagogues, courtyards, galleries and bars. It suits a stay built around meals and wandering between Szeroka, Józefa and Plac Nowy. Wawel is to the west; Rynek is farther north. You do not cross the Vistula to reach the Old Town. Bernatek Footbridge instead takes you south into Podgórze.
Guest roomPURO Kraków Kazimierz
Contemporary rooms on Halicka, on the eastern side of Kazimierz.View on BookingAt PURO Kazimierz, Halicka 14A, the air-conditioned Classic Room is 19 m²; Deluxe gives you 24 m². For a rail arrival, the hotel suggests Kraków Grzegórzki, followed by its estimated five-minute walk. This is a different property from PURO Kraków Stare Miasto.
Standard roomHotel Rubinstein
Szeroka for Kazimierz evenings; listed refundable card deposit: 1,000 PLN.View on BookingAt Rubinstein, Szeroka 12, air-conditioned Standard Rooms are 16–25 m², for two guests. Booking’s property rules list a 1,000 PLN refundable damage deposit per stay, collected by credit card on arrival and refunded at checkout subject to inspection. Check that condition in the rate you select.
If you want to turn in before the bars do, ask where the actual room faces, particularly around Plac Nowy and the streets immediately beside it. Szeroka and Halicka have different settings.
3. Station, Kleparz and Grzegórzki: choose the right side of the tracks
For early trains or a coach departure, stay near Kraków Główny. Pawia and Galeria Krakowska are west of the platforms; the MDA coach station is east, on Bosacka. Allow time to get through the station to the correct side.
Classic double roomMercure Krakow Stare Miasto
Pawia address opposite Galeria Krakowska, useful for repeated train departures.View on BookingAt Mercure, Pawia 18B, Classic doubles start at 20 m² for two, with air conditioning and lifts to all floors. Its “Stare Miasto” name describes the central location broadly: this is the station-facing edge, rather than a room overlooking Rynek.

Hotel Indigo Krakow – Old Town by IHG — art-inspired rooms on Filipa, opposite Stary Kleparz market and west of the station.
Kleparz, around Stary Kleparz market and Filipa, is west of the station and has its own streets and food-shopping life. Grzegórzki extends east and south: an address near Rondo Mogilskie or Rondo Grzegórzeckie is not automatically beside Główny. The newer Kraków Grzegórzki railway stop, at Grzegórzecka, is especially useful for eastern Kazimierz.
4. Podgórze and Zabłocie: the river, Schindler’s Factory and local streets
Stay here if you want the south bank to be part of your everyday route. Old Podgórze, around Rynek Podgórski and St Joseph’s Church, is distinct from Zabłocie, farther east around Schindler’s Factory and MOCAK. Check the address before assuming both are immediately outside your door.
Shared top-floor poolQubus Hotel Kraków
South-bank rooms and a shared top-floor pool overlooking Krakow.View on BookingAt Qubus, leisure-area access is included for hotel guests; children need adult supervision, and the pool and sauna close Mondays, 10:00–14:00, for maintenance. Choose a named river-view room if the outlook matters: an ordinary double does not guarantee it.
Bernatek is the pedestrian crossing towards the western part of Kazimierz. Zabłocie has its own railway stop, so a suitable through SKA1 service can take you towards the airport or Wieliczka without returning to Główny. For Schindler’s Factory, reserve the museum visit separately from your accommodation.

5. Dębniki and the Wawel riverbanks: family space on either bank
Compare these two riverbanks separately. Dębniki and the ICE congress centre are on the south bank. Novotel Kraków Centrum is at Kościuszki 5 in Zwierzyniec, on Wawel’s bank. Dębnicki and Grunwaldzki bridges connect different parts of these riverfronts.
Junior Suite kitchenetteNovotel Kraków Centrum
A named Junior Suite adds a kitchenette and separate living space.View on BookingChoose the named Junior Suite with kitchenette and living room if you need family space: it has a bedroom, living area and 50 m², with a published maximum of four people. For four guests, enter everyone’s ages and confirm the sofa-bed or extra-bed arrangement in this named suite; other room categories do not necessarily have its kitchenette.
The hotel’s indoor pool is closed for maintenance from 15 November to 15 December 2026. For those dates, make the decision on the suite and location. Wawel is on the same bank, so you do not need to cross the river to reach the castle side of the centre.
Twin roomB&B HOTEL Krakow Centrum
South-bank rooms with air conditioning, lift access and bookable paid parking.View on BookingAt B&B, Monte Cassino 1, reception is open 24 hours. A Family room has one double and two single beds, for up to four adults; the photographed Twin room is a separate category. Paid parking is limited, so reserve through reception if you need a space.
Airport bus 300 ends at Os. Podwawelskie, making this side worth comparing for an airport arrival. Add the final walk to your hotel; it does not deliver you to Novotel’s opposite-bank entrance. If driving, arrange the garage and check the city’s entry rules before setting off.

Nowa Huta: a different Krakow, with a different commute
Nowa Huta makes sense as a base when your plans centre on its architecture, green spaces, local events or people you are visiting there. For a first trip focused on Rynek, Wawel and Kazimierz, I would keep a central base and visit Plac Centralny and the surrounding planned avenues by tram.

From the airport to your actual hotel
At Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK), a covered footbridge links the terminal to the railway station. The SKA1 train to Kraków Główny costs 20 PLN per adult, one way, and the ride takes approximately 20 minutes. Waiting time, getting out of the terminal and the final leg to your accommodation are additional.3
| Your base | Arrival station or stop | The final leg |
|---|---|---|
| Pawia, Kleparz or northern Old Town | SKA1 to Kraków Główny | Choose the station exit for your address; Pawia is west, Bosacka and MDA east. |
| Southern Old Town or Novotel’s north-bank riverside | SKA1 to Kraków Główny | Continue by local transport, taxi or a longer walk. Kanonicza and Kościuszki are separate destinations. |
| Eastern Kazimierz, including PURO | A suitable through SKA1 to Kraków Grzegórzki | Walk from the station towards Halicka; follow the hotel’s arrival directions. |
| Podgórze and Zabłocie | A suitable through SKA1 to Kraków Zabłocie | Walk to the specific riverside or Zabłocie address. |
| Dębniki / ICE side | Bus 300 to Os. Podwawelskie | Add the walk or local connection to your south-bank hotel. |
At night, bus 902 links the airport with Dworzec Główny Wschód; you still need to reach your hotel from that stop. Check the operator’s dated timetable for your flight. Buy airport rail tickets through Koleje Małopolskie or its listed sales channels; ordinary bus/tram tickets do not cover this train.
Bus and tram tickets
| Adult ticket | Fare | Validity and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 15-minute | 4 PLN | For a short ride. |
| Single journey / 30-minute | 6 PLN | One bus or tram to the end of its run, even beyond 30 minutes, or transfers within 30 minutes; zones I–III. |
| 60-minute | 8 PLN | Zones I–III. |
| 24-hour, Zone I | 20 PLN | City zone only. |
| 24-hour, all zones | 25 PLN | Includes the zones needed for an airport bus. |
| 48-hour / 72-hour, all zones | 40 PLN / 55 PLN | Compare with the rides you expect to make. |
The airport bus is an agglomeration service; choose the appropriate zones.
Validate a paper ticket on first boarding. Set up a ticket app before boarding, then buy and activate the appropriate ticket immediately as instructed, including the vehicle number or QR code where required. Payment options vary between machines.
City-ticket child rules differ from rail rules: travel is free through 30 September of the year a child turns seven; from 1 October that year until the sixteenth birthday, reduced fares apply with photo identification showing the child’s date of birth. Do not apply this city concession automatically to the airport train.3
Auschwitz and Wieliczka: choose around the booking you have
Auschwitz-Birkenau
Reserve entry at visit.auschwitz.org before arranging the rest of the day. Since 1 March 2026, individual entry cards are issued online only. Guided visits can be booked up to three months ahead; free entry cards up to seven days ahead. Availability can run out.4
The museum does not recommend visits for children under 14.
The Lajkonik coach from MDA, Bosacka 18, reaches the museum car park. Its published journey is about 85 minutes, and the adult fare bought from the driver is 27 PLN one way; online prices can differ. Add time to reach the bus station and arrive for your museum slot.
Some services also accept passengers at Plac Inwalidów or Czarnowiejska. Buy for the stop where you will board. A train to Oświęcim is another option, but the station is approximately 1.5 km from the museum entrance, so allow for that last leg.
Wieliczka Salt Mine
Take a suitable SKA1 towards Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia. Główny is useful for station-area stays, while Grzegórzki and Zabłocie can be better starting points for the eastern and southern bases. From the destination station, continue to the Daniłowicz Shaft, Daniłowicza 10, for the Tourist Route.
The guided visit takes 2–3 hours and involves about 800 stairs. In October–December 2026, the individual English-language Tourist Route with the underground museum costs 143 PLN per adult, excluding transport. Other seasons, concessions and routes have different terms; use the mine’s official booking page for your date. If stairs are a barrier, arrange the limited accessible route with the mine before buying.4
Prices, deposits and arriving by car
Poland’s currency is the złoty: PLN, written zł. For card payments, choosing PLN avoids the merchant’s dynamic currency conversion; your card issuer’s own exchange rate and fees still apply. Compare the stated rate and charges if you are offered conversion into your home currency.
Local overnight levy
The central Krakow bases in this guide have no general local overnight levy in force at this check. For stays from 1 January 2027, check again: the new national framework allows a local fee, but Krakow must adopt its own resolution and rate. Do not treat a national maximum or a proposal as an amount already payable at your hotel.5
Payment and deposits
Check the selected rate’s cancellation terms and included extras. A refundable deposit is separate from an overnight levy: Rubinstein’s listed 1,000 PLN credit-card deposit is described beside its room card.
For an apartment, check the unit’s address, reception, separate bedrooms and cooking facilities. “Aparthotel” does not establish that every room has a kitchen or that a lift reaches it.
Driving and parking
Krakow’s Clean Transport Zone (SCT) is separate from parking and restricted historic-centre streets. Foreign-registered vehicles must be registered in the SCT system before entry, even if compliant. For a non-compliant, non-exempt passenger car, the 2026 paid-entry option can cost 5 PLN through the end of that day, under the two-consecutive-hours payment rule. Use the city’s vehicle checker for your car and date; a hotel garage does not grant an exemption.
Paid street-parking hours are generally 09:00–22:00. Subzone A charges on Sundays except designated shopping Sundays and statutory holidays; B and C charge Monday–Saturday, with statutory-holiday exemptions. Check the street signs and hotel garage arrangements separately. For Copernicus on Kanonicza, use the hotel’s own vehicle-arrival instructions rather than assuming unrestricted door access.5
For a Christmas event, concert or ICE conference, choose around the actual venue and route home. Confirm room air conditioning if you need to keep windows closed in warm weather.
Questions that help you choose
Is Old Town or Kazimierz better for a first visit?
Choose Old Town if Rynek, St Mary’s and Wawel are the main reason for coming. Choose Kazimierz if you want dinner and evenings to shape the stay. You can explore both from one hotel; neither requires a change of base.
Do I need to stay near Główny for day trips?
It is useful for early trains and MDA coaches. It is not compulsory: Grzegórzki and Zabłocie are relevant SKA1 stops, and some Auschwitz coaches have other Krakow boarding points. Choose around the service and departure stop you actually book.
Which option works with children?
Compare the named Novotel Junior Suite when a bedroom, living space and kitchenette would help. B&B’s Family room offers four proper bed places in a simpler setup. Enter the children’s ages and check the exact category, cot and sleeping arrangement before booking.
Can I stay by Wawel without crossing a bridge every day?
Yes. The Old Town side and Novotel’s Kościuszki address are on Wawel’s bank. Dębniki is across the river. “Wawel view” tells you about an outlook, not which side you sleep on.
How many nights make sense?
Allow three nights for the centre, Kazimierz and one substantial excursion at a comfortable pace. Add another night if both Auschwitz and Wieliczka are priorities. The available entry slots should determine the day-trip order.
